JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball dropped a pair of exta-inning games on Saturday to USC Upstate at the UNF Softball Complex, falling 6-1 in 10 innings in Game One and then 7-5 in eight innings in Game Two.
In the first game, solid pitching and defensive play by both teams made it tough to generate any offense through the first five-and-a-half-innings. During that span, UNF and USC Upstate each recorded three hits as the teams remained scoreless.
UNF broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth. The Ospreys capitalized on back-to-back fielding errors by the Spartans that resulted in Jackie Reese scoring and putting UNF up 1-0.
However, USC Upstate answered in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1 when Lindsay Kelly scored on an Ashley Butler single.
UNF and the Spartans remained tied until the top of the 10th. With two outs, USC Upstate drove in five runs on four consecutive hits to go up and ultimately win 6-1.
Kayla Goff came in for the final 1.2 innings and received the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – off two hits. Goff also had one strikeout.
Hannah Alexander pitched all 10.0 innings in order to get the win. Alexander allowed one unearned run off eight hits and struck out nine.
From the plate, both Chie Someya and Marissa Thomas were 2-for-4.
In Game Two, UNF got runs in each of the first three innings to hold an early 5-0 lead. The Ospreys went up 1-0 with Kaley Brosky getting the game's first run. After Kelly Dill reached on a Spartan fielding miscue, Reese laid down a bunt and beat out the throw by sliding head-first into first base. As Reese's bunt was rolling down first base, Dill made her way to third and then slid head-first into home to beat out the throw and put UNF up 2-0.
The Ospreys tacked on two more in the second. Brittany Hendrix sent a one-out double to right center that drove in Danica Mandarano. Hendrix then scored on a Someya hit to left field to make it a 4-0 game.
In the third, Thomas sent a two-out homer that fell beyond the center field wall and gave UNF the 5-0 lead.
However, USC Upstate rallied late in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings. The Spartans rattled off five-consecutive one-out hits – including a double – that drove in three runs and made it 5-3 in favor of UNF. Then with runners on first and second and two outs, Kelly had a two-run double to right center that tied the game.
The Spartans added two more in the eighth when Cheyenne Griffin sent a two-out double to right center.
Goff, who started the game and then re-entered in the eighth, was credited with the loss after allowing four runs off nine hits in 7.0 innings. She also fanned four batters.
Alexander came in for the final 2.0 innings en route to receiving the win. She struck out three while keeping UNF without a hit or a run.
Both Hendrix and Mandarano were 2-for-4 with one run scored in the second game for the Ospreys. Hendrix also had one RBI.
UNF returns to the road on Wednesday when the Ospreys travel to Georgia Southern for a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
