JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis takes an undefeated Atlantic Sun record to the road this weekend when the Ospreys close out the regular season at Kennesaw State on Friday at Noon and Mercer on Saturday at 2 p.m.
After clinching a spot in next week's 2012 Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championship last weekend, UNF's matches this weekend will have an impact on the tournament's seeding. The Ospreys only need to win one match to secure the tournament's No. 1 seed.
UNF are on a roll, having won its last eight matches – seven of which were against A-Sun opponents. UNF has recorded four shutouts and only given up four team points during those eight matches. Only USC Upstate, ETSU, Stetson and Belmont were each only able to register one point against the Ospreys.
Doubles play has been one of the key factors to UNF's winning-streak as the Ospreys have swept all three doubles courts in the last eight matches. The solid doubles combinations of No. 73 Aline Berkenbrock/Lorena Aviles, Simona Weymar/Rebeca Pereira and Danielle Day/Melanie Aguirre all bring multiple winning-streaks into the weekend.
In singles competition, four Ospreys have won six or more of their last matches. Both Berkenbrock and Marina Cunningham have emerged victories in their last six matches. Day brings in an eight-match singles winning streak, while Aviles has won her last nine.
Kennesaw State will be a tough challenge for the Ospreys. The Owls are coming off a 4-3 upset of ETSU where Kennesaw State rallied from being down 3-1 to take the last three singles points. Alexandra Apostu and Virginie Stein have powered Kennesaw State in doubles play with the duo owning a 10-2 overall mark and a 7-0 A-Sun record at No. 1 doubles. Apostu and Stein have also a seven-match winning streak heading into the weekend. Meanwhile, in singles, the Owls have been dominate on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Vera Shkundina is 14-5 at No. 1 singles and 6-1 against Atlantic-Sun opponents. Apostu holds a 15-2 season mark and 7-0 A-Sun record at No. 2 singles and has won her last five matches. Stein is 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the A-Sun at No. 3 and brings a seven-match winning streak into Friday. Additionally, Jana Hueckinghaus has started to come on strong, using a seven-match winning streak to bring her season record to 9-9.
The Owls are also in the hunt for a top-seed to the A-Sun Tournament. Kennesaw State enters the weekend with a 5-2 mark and currently in third in the A-Sun standings. Should the Owls defeat both UNF and Jacksonville and UNF lose both of its matches this weekend, Kennesaw State will be the top seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
Mercer closes out the 2012 season this weekend with matches by hosting Jacksonville on Friday and UNF on Saturday. The Bears will attempt to snap an eight-match losing streak as their last win was a 6-1 decision against Fort Valley State on Mar. 1. Mercer has been swept in its last three matches.
