Baseball Returns Home for Nonconference Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After playing the last three games on the road, the University of North Florida baseball team returns home to play a three-game nonconference series with the University of South Alabama at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The series is slated for Friday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.
The Ospreys (8-4) enter the weekend winning seven of their last nine games. North Florida travelled to Tallahassee, Fla. for a midweek game against Florida A&M and returned home with a 19-1 victory.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored 19 runs on 18 hits, including four doubles and a home run. Tyler Marincov belted his second home run of the season, while Alex Bacon hit two doubles. Chris Carter and Garrick Ferguson each recorded their first hits as Ospreys, finishing the night with a double each. Twelve North Florida batters recorded hits in the game with four players notching multiple hits.
On the mound, Kyle Finch earned his first collegiate start since 2010. The sophomore scattered three hits in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed no runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Spencer Herrmann earned his first collegiate victory in his first outing of the season. The freshman tossed 0.2 innings of relief, coming into the game when the Ospreys erupted for 11 runs. Trey Ferrano, Jamie Cardwell and Spencer Brown worked the final 3.2 innings, with Ferrano working 1.2 innings. The trio surrendered one hit combined in the effort.
UNF's Joe Wielbruda was named to College Baseball 360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll for his performance last weekend against Georgia Southern. The Primetime Performer awards program seeks to recognize players based on more than simple raw stats, instead taking into account quality of opponent, contribution to team success and various situational factors (such as clutch play, all-around performance, leadership, adversity overcome, etc.).
Wielbruda recorded multiple hits in all four games over the weekend helping North Florida to a 3-1 overall record against Georgia Southern. The transfer led the team with three extra base hits with two doubles and the team's only triple of the weekend. Wielbruda had an extra base hit in three of the four games played and scored at least one run in each game. The second baseman led the team in hits, runs scored, doubles, triples and total bases.
In addition, sophomore pitcher Tyler Moore was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week. The ASun Pitcher of the Week honor is the first of Moore's career and the 10th for the Ospreys since joining the conference in 2006. Moore becomes the first North Florida pitcher to earn the accolade since Casey Medlen (2010-11) earned the honor on Feb. 28, 2011.
Moore made three appearances on the weekend, earning a win and two saves. The sophomore worked 4.1 innings in three relief appearances with a 0.00 ERA. Moore allowed just two hits, while striking out five. Opponents batted .143 against him over the course of the weekend.
North Florida is 0-1 all-time against South Alabama, dropping the only meeting between the two teams. The Jaguars edged the Ospreys 4-2 in the South Alabama Classic at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. on Feb. 27, 2010.
In the game with South Alabama, UNF scored two runs on 11 hits. Robbie Collier, Kyle Dahl, Andrew Hannon and Andrew Karmeris each collected a pair of hits in the game with Collier and Hannon each registering doubles. David Eldredge also added a double on the afternoon. Collier and Hannon each scored a run on the day and Preston Hale and T.J. Thompson each drove in a run.
The loss to the Jaguars overshadowed a stellar pitching performance by George Lott. The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. native worked 7.0 innings, scattering six hits. Lott surrendered just one run, walking one and striking out a five batters. He kept the Jaguars off of the scoreboard for the first four innings of the game and the final two innings he pitched. Lott faced just six batters over the minimum with three 1-2-3 innings in the game.
Scouting the Opposition:
South Alabama enters the weekend with a 4-9 (.308) overall record. The Jaguars are 2-6 (.250) at home, but 2-3 (.400) on the road, including a road win over previously ranked Southern Miss (W, 5-3). USA finished 2011 with a 30-28 (.517) record with a 15-15 (.500) mark in the Sun Belt Conference, finishing sixth in the league.
In the offseason, South Alabama welcomed first-year head coach Mark Calvi to the team. Calvi replaced long-time head coach Steve Kittrell who finished his career as the Jaguars' all-time winningest coach at 1,052-644-1 (.620).
