FORT MYERS, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis will look to continue its winning ways on the road this week with two away matches. First up on the Ospreys' trip is a Noon match at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday.
UNF has won its last four, which includes back-to-back 7-0 sweeps of West Virginia on Sunday and Jacksonville on Monday. However, the Ospreys have not play out-of-town in nearly two-and-a-half weeks since they faced Georgia State.
UNF is the only team with an undefeated Atlantic Sun record. So far against Atlantic Sun opponents this season, the Ospreys are 16-2 mark in singles matches and a perfect 9-0 in the doubles competition. Individually, Lorena Aviles brings a seven-match winning streak into Thursday and is 9-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in Atlantic Sun play. Meanwhile, both Danielle Day and Simona Weymar each carry four-match winning streaks in singles.
In doubles, Aline Berkenbrock and Aviles earned the No. 78 spot in this week's ITA doubles national rankings. The duo is 7-3 on the year and all at the No. 1 slot. Day and Melanie Aguirre have won their last six No. 3 doubles matches, while Weymar and Rebeca Pereira are riding a four-match winning streak at No. 2.
Florida Gulf Coast returns to its home courts this weekend after traveling to both USC Upstate and ETSU last weekend. The Eagles went 0-2 during that road trip and are coming off a 7-0 loss at ETSU. Florida Gulf Coast has played most of its matches at home this season and will remain at home for four of its last six matches. The Eagles hold winning marks the No. 4 and No. 5 singles spots. Morgan Bechtel has a 7-5 mark at No. 4 singles, while Bettina Botha is 8-4 on the year at No. 5. Meanwhile, Jen Evans and Gyanna Mandic holds a 10-3 record at No. 2 doubles and are 3-1 against Atlantic Sun opponents this season.
UNF and Florida Gulf Coast played each other at the fall's rain-shortened Panther Invitational. Only two doubles matches were played in between the teams with the Ospreys winning both matches. Then earlier this spring, UNF traveled to Fort Myers for the FGCU Eagle Invite. UNF and Florida Gulf Coast also squared off twice during that tournament. In the Flight 3 semifinals, Day defeated Bechtel 6-1, 6-2 en route to claiming the Flight's title. Pereira downed Zhoe Solaun 6-1, 6-3 in the first round consolation match in the Flight 7 singles.
