Baseball Drops Midweek Game with Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision on the road to Bethune-Cookman at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Ospreys fell to 17-10 overall, while the Wildcats improved to 15-12.
On the mound, Andrew Karmeris took the loss in his first collegiate start. The senior worked 3.1 innings, scattering three hits. He allowed two runs without issuing a walk. A. Karmeris struck out a career high four batters, including striking out the first three Bethune-Cookman batters he faced.
Bryan Mathews worked 1.0 innings of relief. The freshman surrendered two runs on four hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out one. Nick Allbritton tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Evan Stermer tossed the next 1.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit and a walk. Spencer Herrmann closed out the final inning for the Ospreys, retiring the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Offensively, North Florida recorded five hits from five separate players. Alex Bacon, Corey Bass, Paul Karmeris, Michael Wesner and Joe Wielbruda each had hits in the ball game. Bacon and T.J. Gavlik score the Ospreys' two runs on the night with P. Karmeris recording the team's only RBI.
Bethune-Cookman was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wildcats used a single up the middle to start the inning and a passed ball moved the runner into scoring position. With one out, BCU dropped a Texas Leaguer into shallow left field to score the first run of the game. A single to right field extended the inning and prompted a pitching change. The first batter Mathews faced hit a single to right field just out of reach of Tyler Marincov's glove to score the lead runner. The Ospreys used a ground out and fly out to end the inning, but trailed 2-0 after four complete innings of play.
The Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. BCU led off the inning with an infield single and advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt. A single and a stolen base left the home team with a pair of runners in scoring position. The first run of the inning came in on a wild pitch by North Florida. The Ospreys got the next batter to strikeout, but a wild pitch allowed the batter to reach base safely and the lead runner to score. After a pitching change, North Florida used a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning down 4-0.
North Florida cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Bacon was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a passed ball. Gavlik followed with a walk to give UNF a pair of base runners. The Ospreys successfully executed a doubled steal to move both base runners closer to home. Bacon came around to score on a second passed ball of the inning. With one out, Gavlik scored on an RBI groundout by P. Karmeris.
Bethune-Cookman added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats led off the inning with a walk and moved the runner to second with a groundout. With two outs, the next batter singled to left field to score the runner and extend the lead to 5-2.
