Baseball Set to Play Pair of Midweek Games

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns to action for a pair of midweek games against in-state opponents. The Ospreys open up the week at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium against Florida A&M in a nonconference game at 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday, March 28, UNF travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. for a game against Bethune-Cookman at 6:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Tuesday's game at Harmon Stadium will be “Toss It Back Tuesday” with $1.00 beers while supplies last.
North Florida enters the week 16-9 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Florida A&M is 5-20 and 3-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Bethune-Cookman is 14-11 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC and will play FIU in Miami prior to facing off against the Ospreys.
UNF is 8-0 all-time against FAMU after boasting a 19-1 victory earlier this season in Tallahassee. Tied 0-0 heading into the sixth inning, the University of North Florida baseball team scored 11 runs against Florida A&M to break the game open en route to a 19-1 victory at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee, Fla.
Offensively against FAMU, the Ospreys scored 19 runs on 18 hits, including four doubles and a home run. Tyler Marincov belted his second home run of the season, while Alex Bacon hit two doubles. Chris Carter and Garrick Ferguson each recorded their first hits as Ospreys, finishing the night with a double each. Twelve North Florida batters recorded hits in the game with four players notching multiple hits.
On the mound against the Rattlers, Kyle Finch earned his first collegiate start since 2010. The sophomore scattered three hits in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed no runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Spencer Herrmann earned his first collegiate victory in his first outing of the season. The freshman tossed 0.2 innings of relief, coming into the game when the Ospreys erupted for 11 runs. Trey Ferrano, Jamie Cardwell and Spencer Brown worked the final 3.2 innings, with Ferrano working 1.2 innings. The trio surrendered one hit combined in the effort.
North Florida leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman, 10-3. The Ospreys are 8-0 in Jacksonville, but just 2-3 in Daytona Beach. Earlier this month, the University of North Florida baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to record a 4-2 victory over in-state rival Bethune-Cookman at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
North Florida recorded six hits in the game by six different players against the Wildcats. Three of the UNF hits on the night were for extra bases. Bacon finished the game with a home run and two RBI, while Corey Bass and Drew Weeks each had a double. Bass, Weeks, Marincov and Michael Wesner each scored a run in the game. Bacon led the team with two runs driven in with Weeks and Ryan Roberson each adding RBI.
On the mound against BCU, Herrmann picked up the victory. The freshman worked 4.0 innings in a controlled start. Herrmann scattered four hits, surrendering a pair of runs. He did not issue a walk, striking out three. Herrmann was relieved by Chandler Jagodzinski. The senior tossed 2.2 innings with a career-high three strikeouts. Bryan Mathews worked the final 2.1 innings, en route to his first collegiate save. The true freshman allowed a hit and struck out three.
