JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The start of a two-match weekend for University of North Florida women's tennis begins on Saturday at cross-town rival Jacksonville at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex and ends with West Virginia on Sunday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
“We always expect a battle from JU, and tomorrow is no exception,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “We are fresher than we have been in previous matches and are definitely prepared for a fight. It will be the first and last taste of the SunTrust River City Rumble for our freshmen and I am excited to see how they handle themselves in tomorrow's big moments.”
Winner of Saturday's UNF-JU match will earn a barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble. Two points will be at stake on Saturday with the men's teams playing prior to the women's match. UNF enters Saturday with an 8-3 lead in the standings. Since the start of the SunTrust River City Rumble in the 2005-06 school year, UNF is 5-1 against the Dolphins and have won the last three meetings.
UNF is 5-0 this spring when playing in Jacksonville. The Ospreys, who had their mid-week match with UCF cancelled due to weather, are coming off a two-match sweep last weekend. UNF posted a pair of 6-1 wins over both USC Upstate and ETSU in order to go to 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun. The Ospreys are one of three teams that are currently 2-0 in conference play.
Lorena Aviles enters the weekend with a five-match singles winning streak and owns a 2-1 record at No. 1 and 5-1 at No. 2. Meanwhile, Marina Cunningham, Danielle Day and Simona Weymar have each won their last two singles matches. In doubles, Day and Melanie Aguierre also bring a five-match winning streak into the weekend and are 5-0 on the year at No. 3 doubles.
JU wraps up a seven-match homestand with tomorrow's match against UNF. The Dolphins, who have played 11 of their 12 matches this spring at home, are currently 1-5 during their homestand with their only win being a 6-1 victory over USC Upstate last Saturday. JU won two of the three doubles matches and then five of the six singles in the win over the Spartans. Aline Staudt has won seven of her last 10 matches and brings a 9-3 No. 1 singles record into Saturday.
A three-match Florida road trip begins for West Virginia on Sunday. The Mountaineers' trip to the Sunshine State includes matches against UNF, Stetson and UCF. The road has not been friendly for West Virginia this season, who are 1-5 in away matches. West Virginia's lone road win came against Dayton when the Mountaineers squeaked out a 4-3 victory on Feb. 26. However, West Virginia won its last match, a 5-2 victory over Eastern Michigan on Mar. 16. The Mountaineers have been solid at the No. 4 spot in singles play, with Veronica Cardenas and Ikttesh Chahal combining for a 10-4 mark.
“West Virginia is on its Spring Break and most of its season has been indoors,” said Cohen. “The Florida heat will be new for them. Some teams roll over in the heat and some teams get more excited to play. We expect the latter and are ready for a competitive match. We have very few matches at home this year, so it is great for the girls to compete in front of our UNF family.”
Match time for Saturday's UNF-JU showdown is at 2 p.m., at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex. Sunday's match between UNF and West Virginia is scheduled for 11 a.m., at the UNF Tennis Complex.
