JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis continued its dominance at the UNF Tennis Complex this season on Sunday with a 7-0 sweep of West Virginia.
UNF held an advantage going into doubles by taking the No. 3 spot with Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre by default. The Ospreys then went on to win the two doubles matches that were played in order to go up 1-0 in the match. Simona Weymar and Rebeca Periera posted an 8-2 win over Mary Chupa and Ikttesh Chahal at No. 1 doubles. Marina Cunningham and Lorena Aviles cruised to an 8-1 No. 2 doubles victory against Veronica Cardenas and Emily Mathis.
The Ospreys held a 2-0 advantage from the start of singles as Marina Cunningham won by default at No. 6 singles. Both Aviles and Day powered their way to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Aviles downed Chupa 6-0, 6-1 at No . 1 and Day defeated Mathis 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Aguirre rallied at No. 3 singles to take a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 10-4 victory from Cardenas. Weymar picked up a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win at the No. 4 slot over Chahal, while Pereira took a 6-1, 6-3 No. 5 singles win from Catie Wickline.
UNF returns to action tomorrow at cross-town rival Jacksonville. The match, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed to Monday due to storms that rolled through the Jacksonville area on Saturday afternoon. Monday's match will take place at 2 p.m., at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex
