Baseball Continues Homestand with A-Sun Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team continues its six-game homestand with a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against USC Upstate this weekend at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys enter the weekend 15-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Spartans are 16-4 and 3-0 in league play.
North Florida is 31-3 all-time against USC Upstate, including an 18-1 mark at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys won the first 22 games in the series and have won nine of the last 12.
Last season, the Ospreys won the series with the Spartans, 2-1. UNF opened up the series with a 14-5 victory before dropping a 2-0 decision. In the rubber match, the Ospreys outlasted the Spartans, taking the series with a 12-11 victory.
North Florida enters the weekend after a midweek sweep of Savannah State and Bethune-Cookman. The Ospreys opened up the midweek with an 18-2 victory over the Tigers, before rallying for a 4-2 win over the Wildcats.
The Ospreys hit the ball well against Savannah State and Bethune-Cookman, registering 20 hits in the two games, including nine extra base hits. Alex Bacon, Paul Karmeris and Tyler Marincov each had home runs, while P. Karmeris and Evan Stermer each tripled. Drew Weeks recorded a pair of doubles while Corey Bass and Spencer Herrmann also added doubles.
On the mound, North Florida boasted a 2.00 earned run average as a team. Nick Allbritton and Herrman each recorded victories, while Bryan Mathews earned his first collegiate save. The UNF pitching staff scattered 10 hits in 18.0 innings of work, walking just four and striking out 14.

The Spartans are 14-1 at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C., but are just 2-3 on the road, falling on Wednesday night to Gardner-Webb, 6-5, in 10 innings in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The 2012 season is the first year that USC Upstate is eligible for postseason play after sitting out for four years due to NCAA Division I reclassification.
