Tournament Schedule
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball opens the home portion of its schedule this weekend by hosting the Osprey Invitational at the UNF Softball Complex Mar. 2-4. In addition to UNF, also competing in the tournament are McNeese State, St. Bonaventure, Mount St. Mary's and Delaware State.
The weekend also kicks off a 12-game homestand that includes two mid-week doubleheaders and the season's second Osprey Invitational. UNF wrapped up a 12-game road swing at last weekend's Eagle Classic. The Ospreys went 3-2 during that tournament, picking up a pair of wins against Albany and then against host Georgia Southern. Both Lauren Pollack and Kaylie Wallace were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Pollack led UNF with a .500 batting average, getting six hits with three doubles, one home run and 12 RBI. Wallace registered a 0.89 ERA through 15.2 innings. The Ospreys also saw solo lead-off home runs come from Pollack, Jackie Reese and Marissa Thomas during the tournament. All three of the home runs were against Albany with Thomas hitting hers in the sixth in UNF's 3-2 win on Feb. 24. Reese and Pollack both blasted their homers in UNF's 13-5 five inning victory on Feb. 25. Reese's blast started the third, while Pollack's was the beginning of UNF's seven-run fifth inning.
McNeese State enters the weekend with an 11-6 record, making its fourth road trip of the season. Both of McNeese State's last two wins have come in five-inning shutouts. Additionally, the Cowgirls pulled off a 3-1 stunner of preseason No. 1 Arizona State on Feb. 10 in Tempe, Ariz and defeated then-No. 17 Houston twice. Claire Terracina leads McNeese State's with a .327 batting average, 17 hits and four triples. Saturday's game between UNF and McNeese State will be the first meeting between the two teams. It will also be UNF's second game against a current Southland Conference team.
St. Bonaventure takes part in its second tournament in Florida and its third hosted by an Atlantic Sun institution. St. Bonaventure opened the season at USC Upstate and then participated in last weekend's Hatter Classic. The Bonnies got a feel for the UNF Softball Complex on Wednesday night when they split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's. St. Bonaventure enters the weekend with a 6-5 mark and is currently 5-2 in the Sunshine State, but is 0-2 against Atlantic Sun teams. Jessenia Andujar is hitting .458 thus far on the season, getting 11 hits in 24 at bats with two doubles and one homer. Saturday will also be the first meeting between the two teams. UNF is an all-time 2-3 against current Atlantic 10 teams.
Mount St. Mary's begun its season at last weekend's Hatter Classic and enters this weekend with a 2-4 record. Mount St. Mary's defeated Stetson 1-0 on Mar. 24, but lost 2-0 the following day. Mount St. Mary's comes off a mid-week split with St. Bonaventure at the UNF Softball Complex, taking the first game 7-0 before falling 4-3. Nicole Pagano has a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings pitched and is 2-1 this season in the circle. Liz Christiansen leads the team with a .400 batting average, while Cat Clifford has a team-best seven hits and five RBI. UNF holds an all-time 3-0 advantage in the series with Mount St. Mary's and is 4-2 against current Northeast Conference teams.
Delaware State opens the 2012 campaign this weekend. Delaware State plays in both of UNF's tournaments and plays mid-week games at Bethune-Cookman (Mar. 6) and Jacksonville (Mar. 7). The Lady Hornets were predicted to win the 2012 MEAC Softball Championship. There will be a familiar face on the Delaware State sidelines as former UNF assistant coach Janice Savage is now part of the Lady Hornets' coaching staff. Among Delaware State's returners from a year ago is Jordan Reid, whose .497 batting average was second in the nation last year. Reid is a two-time MEAC Player of the Year and was selected as the MEAC's Preseason Player of the Year. Additionally, Reid, Stephanie Sarris, Stephanie Martello and Rachel Carroll were all named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team. UNF also carries a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Lady Hornets. Delaware State is also the third MEAC team in which UNF sees this season, having previously played Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. The Osprys are an all-time 34-10 against current MEAC teams.
The tournament gets underway on Friday afternoon at 4:15 p.m., with Delaware State versus Mount St. Mary's at the UNF Softball Complex. UNF plays its games on Saturday and Sunday. The Ospreys face McNeese State at 4:15 p.m, and then St. Bonaventure at 6:30 p.m. The tournament concludes for UNF on Sunday against Mount St. Mary's at 1:30 p.m., and Delaware State at 3:45 p.m. For a complete schedule, click here.
