2012 General Shale Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championships
MACON, Ga. – Postseason play begins for the fourth-seeded University of North Florida women's basketball team on Thursday when the Ospreys face No. 5 seed Kennesaw State at Mercer's University Center in the first round of the 2012 General Shale Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championships.
UNF makes its third A-Sun Tournament appearance since becoming eligible for the tournament three years ago after completing the Division I transition process. The Ospreys are 2-2 all-time at the Atlantic Sun Tournament and are the fourth seed for the second-straight year. UNF brings a four-game winning streak into the tournament, which includes a 64-56 UNF victory over the Owls on Feb. 18. Most recently, the Ospreys posted a come-from-behind 46-44 victory at Jacksonville. Larkira Jones' layup beat the buzzer, completing UNF's rally. Earlier this week, Brittany Kirkland was selected to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, marking her fourth conference postseason honor of her career.
This is also the third trip to the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the Owls since becoming postseason eligible three years ago. It is the second time the Kennesaw State is the No. 5 seed, previously holding that seeding during the 2010 tournament. Kennesaw State has yet to advance beyond the tournament's first round and enters Thursday's game on a three-game losing skid. Kennesaw State is led by Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Taylor Mills, who has a 12.3 point per game average and is Kennesaw State's top assist maker (124) and swiper (65). Sametria Gideon also powers the Owls' offense with 11.1 points per game and anchors the defense with 8.2 rebounds per game.
The UNF-Kennesaw State series is the longest in UNF's history with Thursday's game being the 32nd meeting. However, the two teams have never met in the postseason. Kennesaw State holds a 17-14 all-time advantage, but UNF has won the last three games.
Tip-off for Thursday's game is set for Noon. At stake in Thursday's game will be a berth to Friday's semifinals where the winner faces No. 1 seed Florida Gulf Coast.
