JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of North Florida baseball team posted a 9-3 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field to claim the three game series.
With the win, the Ospreys improve to 4-2, while the Gamecocks fell to 0-4.
UNF recorded 13 hits on the afternoon compared to 10 by JSU. The Ospreys had the edge on the mound with the North Florida pitchers combining for eight strikeouts compared to six by Jacksonville State.
Offensively, four different Ospreys players registered multiple hits on the day. Senior Andrew Karmeris led the team with three hits, while Paul Karmeris, Ryan Roberson and Drew Weeks each had two hits apiece. Weeks' two hits were both doubles and A. Karmeris added a double on the afternoon. Tyler Marincov had a triple on the day and led the team with two runs scored. Roberson had a team-best three RBI on the day. During the game, Byran Mathews hit his team-leading second home run of the season.
Starting pitcher Tommy Organ earned his first victory of the season. The junior scattered seven hits over 5.2 innings, surrendering just two runs. Organ issued just one free pass, while fanning seven batters. The southpaw was one batter shy of tying his career-high for strikeouts, set against Wagner on Mar. 8, 2011. At one point, Organ retired three consecutive batters by strikeout.
Pitchers Kyle Finch and Ryan McMahon each saw their first action on the mound since 2010. Finch tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits. He walked one and struck out one. McMahon worked the final inning of the game. The sophomore allowed just one run on one hit.
North Florida opened up the scoring early, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. P. Karmeris singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Wielbruda. A. Karmeris followed with a single to the shortstop, moving P. Karmeris to third. A. Karmeris moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Roberson drove home the two base runners with a single through the left side of the infield. Weeks doubled down the left field line to plate Roberson, giving the Ospreys an early 3-0 advantage.
Jacksonville State cut into the lead with a run in the first inning. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, JSU's Sam Eberle homered to left field to trim the UNF lead to 3-1.
The Gamecocks added a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the margin to just one. A walk and a one-out single gave JSU a pair of base runners. An infield single loaded the bases and a fielder's choice scored the lead runner. Organ ended the inning with his third strikeout of the game.
Leading 3-2, UNF doubled its lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Marincov led off the inning with a triple to left field. Roberson drove in his third run of the game with an RBI groundout to short.
Mathews pushed the Osprey lead to 5-2 with a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning. The home run was Mathew's team-leading second homer of the season and the Ospreys' seventh of the year.
North Florida added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Marincov reached base on a fielder's choice to give the Ospreys a runner on first and one out. Weeks drew a two-out walk, advancing Marincov to second. After a pitching change, Alex Bacon delivered an RBI single to left field to extend the UNF lead to 6-2.
In the seventh inning, Roberson singled with one out to give the Ospreys a base runner. Redshirt freshman Garrick Ferguson entered the game to pinch run for Roberson. Ferguson stole his first base as an Osprey to move into scoring position and a wild pitch allowed the freshman to advance to third. He was able to come around to score on a fielding error by the Gamecocks.
UNF added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Wielbruda singled up the middle of the infield with one out and advanced to third on an A. Karmeris double to center field. Wielbruda came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Marincov. The sacrifice fly was the second of the season for Marincov and the fifth of his career, placing the sophomore just one sacrifice fly away from joining UNF's career Division I top 10 in that category.
The Ospreys manufactured a run in the top of the ninth inning. Weeks led off the inning with a double to right center field. After a Bacon walk, Weeks stole third base to move to within 90 feet of home. The freshman scored on an RBI groundout by Joe Iorio to give UNF a 9-2 advantage.
Jacksonville State scored a run in the ninth inning, but the Ospreys thwarted any chance of a Gamecock comeback. JSU led off the inning with a triple to right center field. The runner came home on a fielding error by the Ospreys. McMahon induced a fly ball to center field for the first out of the inning. After a hit batter, the hurler used a foul out to the catcher and a ground out to end the inning and shut the door on the Gamecocks.
North Florida and Jacksonville State will conclude the three-game tilt with a single game on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (ET) at Rudy Abbott Field in Jacksonville, Ala.
