STATESBORO, Ga. – University of North Florida softball exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth en route to defeating Albany 13-5 in five innings on Day Two of the Eagle Classic on Saturday.
Up by one going into the fifth, Lauren Pollack began the inning with a lead-off homer to center field. With bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Danica Mandarano to score and Chie Someya and Kelly Wilson each advance one base. Megan Mihalik walked to load up the bases once again. Marissa Thomas walked in the next at-bat, allowing Wilson to come home for the Ospreys' third run of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Mariah Reynolds drilled a double to right center, bringing in three runs to bring UNF's run total up to six for the inning. Pollack added a double to left center that drove in Reynolds, giving UNF its seventh run of the inning and a commanding eight-run, 13-5 advantage.
To start the game, UNF went up 1-0 in the first as the Ospreys capitalized on an Albany miscue that allowed Jackie Reese to score.
Albany came back in the second to take a 2-1 lead. With runners in scoring position, Alexa Toole sent a two-run single to right field.
The Great Danes' lead was short lived as the Ospreys came back with a five-run third inning. Reese began the inning with a lead-off homer to left field. With runners on the corners, a Reynolds RBI single drove in Kaley Brosky and put UNF up 3-2. Alyson Baily sent a hit to left field that brought in Brittany Hendrix, while a two-out Kelly Dill double to right center drove in two more runs as UNF held a 6-2 lead.
Albany attempted to come back, getting one run in the third and then two more in the four to make it a one-run game. However, UNF had its big seven-run inning that propelled the Ospreys to the 13-5, run-rule win.
Kayla Goff (2-2) was credited with the win. Goff pitched all five innings, recording six strikeouts and allowing five runs – four earned – off seven hits.
Brittany Schwieger received the loss after allowing seven runs – three earned – off eight hits.
Five Ospreys – Brosky, Reynolds, Pollack, Bailey and Dill – registered two hits in the game, while Madarano and Reese each had one. Additionally, 11 UNF players scored runs. Meanwhile, Reynolds tallied five RBI.
Kylie Apostolina and Toole each recorded two hits for the Great Danes.
