JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team returns to the road for its next two matches, first traveling to Tampa to face USF.
“USF is a perennial top-50 team that competes each year to win the BIG EAST Championship,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “This is a huge opportunity for our guys and will give us a great idea of where we are at in the national scene.”
UNF carries a two-match winning streak into Friday's match after defeating in-state foes UCF and Florida Atlantic last week. Against the Knights last Friday, the Ospreys took the top four singles matches en route to a 4-2 win with Moritz Buerchner, Norbert Nemcsek, Daniel Sotomarino and Julien Belair all emerging victorious. A day later, the Ospreys swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles for a 6-1 win over the Owls. It was the second time this season in which UNF swept the doubles matches in order to take the doubles point. UNF has captured the doubles point in all of its wins this season except for UCF where doubles was not played due to anticipated rainfall.
On Wednesday, Sotomarino was named the Atlantic Sun's Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. It was Sotomarino's first weekly award and the second time an Osprey was named Player of the Week by the conference this season.
USF has lost all six of its matches in the dual season, but all six of the Bulls' opponents were nationally ranked with the lowest one being UNLV (then-No. 61) and on the road. USF opened the season against then-No. 2 Virginia, took part in this spring's ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles, Calif and comes off a loss at then-No. 39 Miami last Saturday. Friday's match will be the Bulls' first home match since hosting the fall's USF Invitational Oct. 28-30.
UNF and USF played at two tournaments during the fall season – the State of Florida Championships at USF Sept. 23-26 and the ITA Southeast Region Championships in Athens, Ga., Oct. 21-24. At the State of Florida Championships, Buerchner defeated USF's Wael Kilani for the Flight A Singles title. Meanwhile, Leonardo Nahar defeated USF's Sebastian Hagn in a three-set thriller in the quarterfinals en route to the Flight B Singles crown. Players from UNF and USF only met once in singles and once in doubles at the ITA Southeast Region Championships with USF coming up with wins in those two matches.
Match time for Friday is set for 2 p.m., from the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
