JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Brittany Kirkland scored 23 points and Jadhken Kerr became the program's all-time leader for three-pointers made as University of North Florida women's basketball posted a 64-56 win over Kennesaw State in the Ospreys' home finale on Saturday at UNF Arena.
The day was also senior day with UNF recognizing its four graduating players – Kim Baker, Kirkland, Megan Peterson and Taylor Smith.
Kerr also added 12 points for the Ospreys, hitting two treys in the second half. She tied Leigh Gaudy's mark of 206 at 15:58 and then broke it at 10:59 with her career 207th three-pointer.
Larkira Jones led the Ospreys (12-16, 8-8 9-8 Atlantic Sun) in rebounding and was the only player in double-digits for either team, pulling down 13.
Kristina Wells had 19 points for the Owls (13-14, 8-8 Atlantic Sun) and Sametria Gideon added 11. Lisa Capaellan grabbed six boards.
UNF shot 44.0 percent for the night (22-for-50), while Kennesaw State was 36.4 percent (20-for-55). The Ospreys also held a 42-30 advantage on the glass.
UNF dominated the first half, shooting 50.0 percent from the field (12-for-24) and from three-point range (4-for-8). Up by two at 15:45, the Ospreys went on a 14-0 run over the next 9:07 to go up 21-5. Taylor Smith's layup at 7:35 gave UNF the 16-point advantage, but Kennesaw State's scoring drought ended at 6:38 when Taylor Mills hit a three.
The Ospreys gradually pushed their lead to 21, taking a 33-12 when Taylor Smith hit a free throw at 2:49. The Owls chipped away at UNF's lead and got the final six points of the half as UNF held a 35-22 advantage going into halftime.
Kennesaw State brought UNF's lead down to six to start the second half as a layup by Wells made it 36-30 in favor of UNF at 17:15. The Ospreys attempted to pull away and built up a 16-point lead with a Jones layup at 9:15 to make it 54-38. However, Kennesaw State continued to cut into the Ospreys' lead, bringing it down to 10 with a Gideon jumper at 38 seconds. Two made foul shots by Kirkland gave UNF a 12-point, 64-52 advantage at 36 seconds. The Owls got four points in the final 18 seconds as UNF held on for the win.
The regular season comes to a close next Saturday when the Ospreys travel to cross-town rival Jacksonville for the River City Rumble. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., at Swisher Gymnasium.
