Swimming Closes Out Calendar Year with Road Meet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming team heads to Daytona Beach, Fla. for a dual meet against Daytona State College. The meet will be the final meet of 2012 for the Ospreys. UNF will not compete against until Friday, Jan. 4 when North Florida hosts a tri meet against South Georgia and UNC Wilmington (4:00 p.m.) at the UNF Aquatic Center.
North Florida returns to action after a solid showing in the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Invitational. The Ospreys earned third place accolades in the 10-team invitational. Throughout the competition, the UNF swimmers posted at least two times per race that rank in the top 10 times for the 2012-13 season. Freshman Amy Taylor posted the season's best time in the 1,650-yard freestyle, clocking a 17:37.55 in the event.
On day one of the SCAD Invitational, Taylor and Olivia Langford kicked off the competition with the 1,650 free. Taylor posted the best time in the mile, notching a time of 17:37.55, topping her previous season best set at the All-Florida Invitational on Sept. 30 in Gainesville, Fla. Langford posted a time of 18:10.67 in the event to earn 12 points for the Ospreys.
In the second event of the evening, the quartet of Taylor, Bridget Woods, Langford and Natalie McCallum posted the top finish of the day for the Ospreys in the 800 freestyle relay. The time of 7:53.89 was the top time of the year for UNF. The relay team of Janie Kennedy, Caitlyn Gutierrez, Rebeca Bernard and Maria Bernard finished just off the pace with a collective time of 8:02.67.
Day two started the day with the 200 freestyle relay. The team of R. Bernard, Ellice Mae Sanchez, M. Bernard and McCallum posted the second fastest time of the season in the event with a time of 1:41.58. The quartet of Kennedy, Gutierrez, Langford and Taylor were just off the pace with a time of 1:45.25.
In the finals of the 200 freestyle, Langford (1:58.46) and Taylor (1:59.11) finished back-to-back, scoring 12 and 11 points for the Ospreys, respectively. Twin sisters M. Bernard and R. Bernard were nearly identical in the pool with times of 2:00.50 and 2:00.75, correspondingly.
Sanchez was the Ospreys' top finisher in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.63. The time gives the sophomore the top five times of the season for UNF in the event. Kristina Alexiou clocked a 1:01.94 in the event followed by Katie England with a 1:04.59.
Sara Evans finished just 0.24 seconds off of her season-best time in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:35.29 to pace the Ospreys. Lissa Janowicz (4:41.52), McCallum (4:41.82) and Woods (4:44.05) each scored points in the finals for North Florida.
In the 50 freestyle, R. Bernard advanced to the finals and notched a time of 25.87.
A trio of Ospreys advanced to the finals of the 200 breaststroke. Evans led the charge with a time of 2:25.39, followed by Woods' time of 2:28.01 and England's 2:33.23.
Taylor (1:00.95) and Janowicz (1:00.57) finished back-to-back for the Ospreys in the 100 butterfly. Sanchez was also in the finals, posting a season-best time of 1:02.36.
In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay team of Sanchez, Woods, Janowicz and M. Bernard notched a time of 4:02.89 to pace the North Florida team. Alexiou, Evans, Taylor and R. Bernard recorded a time of 4:08.62 in the event.
On the final day of competition, the day started for the Ospreys with the 200-yard medley relay. The North Florida relay team of Sanchez, Woods, Janowicz and McCallum posted a time of 1:51.64. The second quartet for UNF in the race – Alexiou, Evans, M. Bernard and R. Bernard – posted a time of 1:57.12.
In the 200 individual medley finals, Evans and Woods finished back-to-back to lead the Ospreys in the event. Evans posted a time of 2:09.84 – her third fastest time of the year to pace the UNF attack. Woods' time of 2:12.37 placed the sophomore just behind Evans. McCallum was also in the finals and the sophomore notched a time of 2:15.96.
Three Ospreys advanced to the finals of the 100 freestyle. Sanchez was the top finisher for North Florida, clocking a season-best time of 54.81. Twin sisters R. Bernard and M. Bernard finished back-to-back with times of 55.59 and 55.63, respectively.
A pair of North Florida freshmen and a sophomore competed in the finals of the 500 freestyle. Langford (5:08.84) and Taylor (5:15.74) were the top two finishers for UNF, followed by Janowicz (5:21.27).
Sanchez was the top finisher for the Ospreys in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:12.09. She was joined by Alexiou (2:11.71) and Taylor (2:17.74).
The 100 breaststroke, Woods was the top performer, registering a time of 1:06.79 to take bronze in the event. The time was the second-best of the season for the sophomore. McCallum and Katie England also advanced to the finals with McCallum clocking a time of 1:10.91 followed by England's 1:10.92.
The 200 butterfly saw a pair of Ospreys finish in the top 8 of the finals. Evans clocked a time of 2:11.12, while Janowicz was just off the pace with a time of 2:14.70.
In the final event of the meet, the quartet of R. Bernard, Sanchez, M. Bernard and Langford posted a time of 3:37.97 in the 400 freestyle relay to pace the Ospreys. Janie Kennedy, Caitlyn Gutierrez, England and Woods notched a time of 3:45.60 to provide crucial points in the final event to secure the team's third place finish.
