
Swimming/Diving Travels to Miami for Dual Meet with FIU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, with a dual meet on the road with FIU at the Bay Vista Aquatics Complex. The meet is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
In the early going of the season, the Ospreys have had success with several swimmers and divers posting times/points in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association's Top 16 of the season.
In the freestyle events, Amy Taylor (4th) and Rebeca Bernard (16th) each rank in the 200 yard freestyle. Taylor (2nd) and Olivia Langford (11th) each have times in the 500 free, while Taylor (5th), Langford (8th) and Janie Kennedy (16th) each boast marks in the 1,650 free.
In the backstroke, Ellice Mae Sanchez holds times in the top 16 in the 50 back (4th), 100 back (8th) and the 200 back (8th), while Taylor (13th) boasts a time in the 200 back. The breaststroke features Bridget Woods, Sara Evans and Natalie McCallum. Woods is 5th in the 100 breaststroke and 4th in the 200 breaststroke, while Evans is 10th and 9th, respectively. McCallum is 13th in the 200 breaststroke. Evans (5th) and Lissa Janowicz boast times in the 200 butterfly. Evans (5th), Woods (6th) and McCallum (13th) each rank in the 200 individual medley, while Evans (6th) and McCallum (9th) are each in the Top 10 in the 400 IM.
Four of the North Florida divers rank in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Fernanda Robles, who earned was named CCSA Diver of the Week on Oct. 5, leads the Ospreys with a 4th place mark in the 1m and 5th place points in the 3m. Monica Rice is 5th in the 1m board and 8th in the 3m, while senior captain Julia Moomaw boasts 8th and 6th on the respective boards. Freshman Amanda Habig is 10th in the 1-meter board and 9th in the 3-meter board.
North Florida has swum against FIU each of the last two seasons with the Panthers getting the better of the Ospreys. Last year, the Ospreys fell 187.00-110.00 to the Panthers, while in dropping a 177.00-64.00 decision in Miami in 2010.
The Ospreys enter the meet with a 1-1 record in dual meets on the year. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the UNF swimming team competed in a tri-meet on the road in Buies Creek, N.C. on the campus of Campbell University. The Ospreys dominated North Carolina A&T, 216.00-37.00, but were edged by just two points by meet host Campbell, 132.00-130.00.
North Florida posted solid finishes throughout the entire meet against Campbell and North Carolina A&T.
The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay and North Florida placed first and third to open the meet strong. The relay team of Sanchez, Woods, Janowicz and McCallum posted a time of 1:50.99 to claim the event. Just off the lead pace, the quartet of Kristina Alexiou, Katie England, Maria Bernard and Caitlyn Gutierrez took third place with a time of 1:56.24.
In the 1,000 freestyle, Taylor and Langford placed second and third, respectively. Taylor clocked a time of 10:31.07 to earn second place points for the Ospreys, while Langford posted a time of 10:51.42. The 200 freestyle saw North Florida finish second and third once again. R. Bernard was the top finisher for the Ospreys in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.13. R. Bernard finished just fractions of a second ahead of twin sister M. Bernard who took third with a time of 1:58.35.
North Florida's Sanchez took top honors in the 100 backstroke. The sophomore broke one minute with a time of 59.85 to take the event. In the 100 breaststroke, the tandem of McCallum and Woods both touched at 1:07.72 to tie for first place in the event. Janowicz and Evans finished back-to-back in the 200 butterfly. Janowicz posted a time of 2:09.91, while Evans swam a 2:12.22.
In the 50 freestyle sprint, R. Bernard, Gutierrez, Kennedy and Sanchez finished in order for North Florida. R. Bernard notched a time of 25.59 to pace the Ospreys. Gutierrez and Kennedy recorded times of 25.85 and 25.93, respectively, while Sanchez clocked a 26.07. R. Bernard continued the meet with a third place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.74.
In the 200 backstroke, Sanchez, Taylor and Alexiou placed back-to-back-to-back for North Florida. Sanchez took second place in the event with a time of 2:10.27, while Taylor claimed third with a mark of 2:14.06. The 200 breaststroke saw UNF boast three of the top four performances in the event. Woods and Evans finished first and second in the 200, while England earned points with a fourth place finish. Woods edged Evans with a time of 2:26.86, while Evans notched a 2:26.89.
North Florida's distance swimmers took first and second in the 500 freestyle. Taylor posted a time of 5:05.29 to win the event, followed by Langford (5:13.93) who earned second place accolades.
The Ospreys took three of the top four position in the 100 butterfly. Janowicz won the event with a 1:00.20 just ahead of teammate McCallum's 1:00.55. Campbell claimed third in the event, followed by Langford (1:01.61). Evans earned second place honors in the 200 individual medley. The senior timed in at 2:10.56 to earn silver. Woods posted second best UNF performance in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.57.
The final event was the difference in the scoring with Campbell. The host Camels (3:37.12) claimed the 400 freestyle relay by seven one-hundreds of a second (0.07) to edge the Ospreys in the event. The foursome of R. Bernard, M. Bernard, Langford and McCallum earned second place with a time of 3:37.19 and the UNF quartet of Kennedy, Alexiou, Taylor and Evans (3:42.05) earned bronze.
