JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team plays two of the final three matches of the regular season this weekend. The matches will determine if the Ospreys make it to the six-team Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament slated to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 7. UNF travels to Deland, Fla. to face Stetson in a match on Friday night (7:00 p.m.) before hosting Lipscomb in a home match at Hodges Stadium on Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m.).
North Florida enters the weekend with a 3-11-0 overall record and a 0-5-0 mark in the A-Sun. Despite the record, the Ospreys still have a chance to make the conference tournament. North Florida is currently in last place in the league, but plays both Stetson and Lipscomb this weekend who are tied for seventh with identical 1-3-1 records in the A-Sun. In addition, the Ospreys host crosstown rival Jacksonville next Saturday. Entering this weekend, the Dolphins are in sixth place with a 2-4-0 league record.
In the Atlantic Sun Conference, three points are awarded for a win with one point for a tie. With three matches to play in conference, Jacksonville, the sixth place team, has six points, while both Lipscomb and Stetson have four points apiece.
JU has just two matches left, hosting the Bisons on Friday night before facing the Ospreys at Hodges Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 3. Lipscomb concludes the regular season with road matches at Jacksonville and North Florida this weekend and ending the season at Northern Kentucky – tied for third place, but not eligible for A-Sun Championship due to NCAA reclassification. Stetson plays four matches the remainder of the season, but only three conference matches. The Hatters host North Florida on Friday and East Tennessee State – currently tied with Mercer for first place – before ending the conference season on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Florida Gulf Coast – currently in third place.
This season North Florida has battled injuries, but still managed to improve dramatically from a season ago. The Ospreys have tripled their win total from a season ago. In addition, UNF has more than doubled its total goals scored and notched over four times as many assists. This season more players have scored and five times as many players have notched multiple goals on the year. Mauricio Valderruten leads the team with three goals on the year, while Max McDaniel, Jean Rivaroli, Teddy Mulamba and Camilo Garcia each have a pair of goals apiece. Alex Morrell and Greg Crowell currently lead the squad with two assists each.
At goal, the Ospreys have recorded 111 saves this year and boast a pair of goalies – Brad Sienkiewicz and Kyle Nasta – with over 45 saves apiece. North Florida currently leads the NCAA in shaves per match and Nasta leads the nation individually in the category. The true freshman also ranks 45th in the NCAA in total saves.
North Florida opens the weekend with a match at Stetson. The Hatters hold a 6-1-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools. The Ospreys are 0-3-0 in DeLand. The match between UNF and SU will be a “Coaches vs. Cancer” match. With a goal of raising awareness of cancer, acknowledging survivors, and honoring those who lost their lives to cancer, 2012 marks the third annual Coaches vs. Cancer men's soccer matches in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Ospreys hosted Mercer on Thursday, Oct. 18 for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer match.
UNF closes out the weekend with a home match against Lipscomb. The all-time series with the Bisons is even at 3-3-1. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m. and will be aired on ASun.TV. Live stats and in-match tweets (@OspreyMSOC) will also be available.
