JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team heads to Buies Creek, N.C. for a tri-meet with a pair of Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association opponents. Campbell plays host to both North Florida and North Carolina A&T in a tri-meet slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. Since neither the Camels nor the Aggies have diving, the Ospreys will just bring their swimmers to the event.
UNF enters the meet after opening the 2012-13 season at the All-Florida Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The meet pitted the state of Florida's top swimming and diving teams against each other in a single meet. Meet-host Florida won the three-day invitational, followed by Florida State. Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association foe Florida Gulf Coast took third, followed by Miami, Florida Atlantic, North Florida, Nova Southeastern and Rollins College. In men's competition, Florida downed Florida State. Florida Atlantic placed third, followed by Nova Southeastern, Rollins and Miami. The All-Florida Invite was a chance for the Ospreys to let seven newcomers get their feet wet.
This weekend North Florida will look to continue to improve in the early going of the season. The Ospreys defeated the Camels at the UNF Aquatic Center last season, 168.00-119.00. Campbell edged North Florida, 104.00-101.00, in the last meeting between the two schools in Buies Creek.
UNF has not competed against North Carolina A&T in the regular season the past two seasons. The Aggies were slated to come to Jacksonville twice during the 2010-11 season, but both meets were cancelled. The two teams met twice during the 2009-10 season in Jacksonville with the Ospreys claiming 104.00-61.00 and 129.00-46.00 victories.
North Florida has finished ahead of Campbell and North Carolina A&T at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships each of the last five years.
The last time the Ospreys competed in Buies Creek, Sara Evans sparked the North Florida scoring with a pair of individual first place finishes. She claimed first place in the 200 yard individual medley and the 200 breaststroke, while claiming second place in the 500 freestyle.
Current swimmers Katie England and Evans were the only two swimmers who competed in the 2010 meet in Buies Creek that will compete this weekend.
