JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Mercer at Hodges Stadium on Thursday night. The Ospreys trailed 1-0 in the first half, but a pair of late goals by the Atlantic Sun Conference's top team put the match out of reach.
North Florida amassed nine shots on the night, including a pair of shots on goal. Max McDaniel led all Osprey players with three shots and both of UNF's shots on goal. Casey Caronis and Alex Morrell each recorded two shots apiece while Drew Bruce and Camilo Garcia each added shots.
Brad Sienkiewicz worked all 90 minutes at goalkeeper for the Ospreys. The graduate student surrendered three goals, but notched six saves on the night. Sienkiewicz and the UNF defense withstood a barrage of shots from the Bears offense. Mercer took 23 shots on the night, including nine shots on goal.
Mercer took the lead in the 19th minute with a goal by Sharpe Sablon. He took a through ball from Ehjayson and dribbled it past the keeper for the goal. The match remained 1-0 at intermission as both defenses thwarted the other team's offense.
At halftime, Mercer held a slight 8-to-5 advantage in shots. The Bears notched three shots on goal in the opening stanza, but were whistled for twice as many fouls as the Ospreys (6-to-3). Both teams took a pair of corner kicks, but neither team was able to capitalize on the opportunity.
The second half saw more offensive opportunities by Mercer, but the North Florida defense stood strong. The Ospreys surrendered a second goal in the 85th minute of the contest. The Bears' Jason Sayers took a shot that was deflected by Henry into the goal just past a diving keeper to put the visitors in front 2-0.
Just over a minute later, MU provided the final margin with an insurance goal. Sayers dumped the ball off to Ryan King who took an open shot from the right side of the goal to the back left corner to put Mercer in front 3-0, a lead they would not relinquish.
North Florida will now take the weekend off before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 26 on the road at Stetson. The match is slated for 7:00 p.m. in DeLand, Fla.
