NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of North Florida women's basketball began its trip to Nashville with a 57-35 loss at Belmont on Thursday night at the Curb Event Center.
Jadhken Kerr led the Ospreys (8-13, 5-5 Atlantic Sun) with 11 points, while Larkira Jones grabbed five rebounds.
Katie Brooks scored a game-high 18 points for Belmont (7-14, 6-4 Atlantic Sun), while Haley Nelson recorded a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double.
UNF shot 25.6 percent from the floor (11-for-43), while the Bruins were 43.4 percent (23-for-53). Belmont also held a 40-30 advantage in rebounds.
Cold shooting plagued the Ospreys throughout the entire first half as UNF was just 18.2 percent from the field with three field goals. Belmont began the game with a 10-0 run. Jadhken Kerr hit a jumper at 15:04 that stopped the run, but Katie Brooks had a jumper 20 seconds later to return a 10-point advantage to the Bruins. After nearly three minutes with no points from either team, Raneisha Lamar sank free throw that was the first of four UNF points that pulled the Ospreys to within six and make it a 12-6 game at 10:17. Belmont led by as many as 15 before a Kerr trey at 2:38 pulled UNF to within 12. Kerr's three was also the final basket of the half as the Bruins took a 25-13 lead into halftime.
The Ospreys' shooting picked up midway through the second half with UNF shooting 58.3 percent with 7:28 to go. With Belmont up by 19, a jumper from Octavia Langston was the first of an 8-2 run that made it a 41-28 game at 8:55. Langston was responsible for six points during that run. UNF eventually pulled to within 12 as another three-pointer came from Kerr and made it 43-31 in favor of Belmont with 8:06 to go. However, a 12-0 run for Belmont allowed the Bruins to pull away from the Ospreys.
UNF concludes its trip to Nashville on Saturday when the Ospreys face Lipscomb on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST.
