
Swimming/Diving Concludes Home Slate With Senior Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team participated in its final dual meet of the year in preparation for the upcoming Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships as the Ospreys dropped a 132-102 decision to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday afternoon at the UNF Aquatic Center. The meet served as Senior Day and prior to the meet UNF honored its senior Gala Poon for her four-year career.
The meet started with the 200-yard medley relay. The Ospreys' team of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Bridget Woods, Natalie McCallum and Maria Bernard combined for a time of 1:52.21 to pace North Florida. In the 1,000 freestyle, Christine Kemp and Lissa Janowicz finished in order with times of 10:56.18 and 11:02.57, respectively.
In the 200 freestyle, M. Bernard was the Ospreys' top finisher, posting a time of 1:57.67. Rebeca Bernard (2:01.13) and Katie England (2:05.17) finished back-to-back in the event. Sanchez (25.87), Poon (27.42) and Emily Wynn (27.72) finished in order for North Florida in the 50 freestyle.
Sara Evans, the reigning CCSA Swimmer of the Week, continued her streak winning her fourth consecutive event, taking first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.21. Woods (2:13.35) was second among UNF swimmers, while McCallum (2:14.33) and Kristina Alexiou (2:19.14) followed.
In one-meter diving, Julia Moomaw took first place with a combined score of 253.50. Moomaw barely edged out teammate and current CCSA Diver of the Week Monica Rice, who registered a score of 252.07. Morgan Whittle notched a score of 174.76 in her third collegiate meet.
In the 100 butterfly, Evans was the top finisher for UNF, posting at time of 1:00.37, just ahead of Janowicz (1:00.42).
M. Bernard claimed first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.26. The freshman edged out her twin sister R. Bernard, whose time of 55.59 was good enough for third.
Sanchez (1:01.52) was the top finisher for the Ospreys in the 100 backstroke, claiming second place. She was followed by Alexiou (1:02.59) and Poon (1:03.76). In the 500 freestyle, Kemp and Janowicz finished in order with times of 5:21.58 and 5:28.04, respectively.
The three-meter diving event saw Rice edging out Moomaw for first place. Rice posted a score of 271.95 to claim the event. Moomaw's score of 270.37 was good enough for second place.
Woods (1:08.60), McCallum (1:11.12) and England (1:12.57) finished back-to-back-to-back in the 100 breaststroke. In the final event of the day – the 200 freestyle relay, the team of R. Bernard, Evans, Alexiou and Kemp combined for a score of 1:43.57.
North Florida will continue training before the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships on Feb. 16-18 in Athens, Ga. at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
