Swimming/Diving Returns to Action with Dual Meet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team returns to the historic UNF Aquatic Center for a dual meet with Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association foe Georgia Southern on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. Admission to the event is FREE.
The Ospreys enter the meet after claiming a pair of victories in a tri-meet last weekend against College of Charleston and Radford. UNF defeated the Cougars, 135.00-107.00, and bested the Highlanders, 171.00-69.00, while the College of Charleston defeated Radford (172.50-64.50). North Florida placed in the top three in 11 of the 13 events on the day, sweeping the top three spots in a pair of events.
UNF started off the day by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The freshman foursome of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Bridget Woods, Lissa Janowicz and Natalie McCallum posted a time of 1:51.25 to win the event by nearly three seconds. The Ospreys finished first and second in the 1,000 freestyle, as freshmen Christine Kemp (10:48.09) and Kristina Alexiou (11:00.32) earned the top two slots in the event.
In the 200 freestyle, North Florida's Maria Bernard and Sara Evans claimed two of the top three spots. M. Bernard's time of 1:58.71 was good enough for second place, while Evans' mark of 1:59.83 placed the junior in third. Freshman Rebeca Bernard was UNF's top finisher in the 50 freestyle, boasting a time of 25.57. Woods was the top finisher in the 200 individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:11.77. Evans posted a 2:13.62 in the event to take third place honors.
In the one-meter diving, freshman Monica Rice edged out teammate Julia Moomaw for first place. Rice's score of 221.40 was good enough for first, while Moomaw claimed second place with a score of 220.35.
The Ospreys continued to roll in the 100 butterfly as Janowicz and McCallum finished second and third, respectively, with times of 1:00.34 and 1:00.39. Kemp and M. Bernard finished back-to-back for North Florida in the 100 freestyle. Kemp (55.52) edged M. Bernard (55.72) by two tenths of a second. Sanchez was the top finisher for North Florida in the 100 backstroke, recording a time of 1:00.60 to earn second place accolades. In the 500 freestyle, Kemp, Alexiou and R. Bernard finished 1-2-3 to sweep the event. Kemp recorded a time of 5:16.83 to win the event with Alexiou (5:21.63) finishing in second and R. Bernard (5:24.03) taking third.
The divers claimed three of the top four spots in the three-meter board. Moomaw posted a score of 254.32 to earn first place honors. Rice finished in second place with a score of 245.02 and newcomer Morgan Whittle took fourth with a 174.14.
In the final individual race of the afternoon, North Florida swept the 100 breaststroke. Woods (1:07.77) earned first place accolades with McCallum (1:07.98) taking second and Evans (1:09.94) rounding out the top three. The Ospreys' relay team of M. Bernard, R. Bernard, Janowicz and Sanchez posted a time of 1:42.44 in the 200 freestyle relay to take second place honors.
