JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite outshooting their opponents 25-14, the University of North Florida women's soccer team fell to the Furman Paladins 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, victim of a disappointing goal with just 31 seconds remaining.
The Ospreys, with the exception of brief periods in each half, seemed to have control of the match from start to finish. Beside the difference in shots, UNF also took 10 corners to the Paladins' five.
“It was definitely frustrating to watch, because I think we probably played a little better for most of the game,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton. “At the same time, we absolutely have to be better at finishing our chances.”
The Ospreys jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Sophomore midfielder Heather Botelho teed up a free kick from about 40 yards, directing it towards the center of the box. There, fellow sophomore Keara Murphy shook her mark and found the ball with her head to direct it into the right side of the net and give UNF an early advantage.
Furman equalized in the 41st minute, when Rachel Shelnutt and Alexa Morse played a quick give-and-go on the right side of the box before Shelnutt finished with a shot into the top of the net from about eight yards out to tie the game at 1-1.
Both sides peppered the opposing goal in the first half, combining for 20 shots in the opening period. The Ospreys' attempts seemed more threatening, drawing five acrobatic saves out of Furman goalkeeper Jessica Smith before halftime.
UNF came out of halftime and, with the help of sophomore forward Carolina Lencina, set a breakneck tempo from the start. Lencina tallied five shots in the first 15 minutes before Furman recorded their first attempt, including one that struck the post and another that had to be saved by Paladin defender Ali Simpson.
The Ospreys kept up the attacking pace, accumulating 14 shots in the second period compared to just five for Furman.
Simpson and the Paladins only needed one important shot, though, to escape Jacksonville with a win. Midfielder India Thompson lofted a corner kick into the box with roughly 35 seconds left on the clock that was knocked around in traffic about six yards from the mouth of the goal. Simpson pounced on a rebound and poked the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey to put Furman ahead 2-1 with just 31 seconds left and seal the game for the Paladins.
“We managed to grab a double-overtime victory Friday evening when another team had a brief lapse,” Hamilton said, “so I think this game was a good learning experience that, unless we play all 90 minutes at 100%, it can easily happen to us as well.”
Dorsey tallied three saves on the day for UNF, while Smith racked up an impressive 10 stops for the Paladins.
The Ospreys are next in action Friday Sept. 9th, when they travel into North Carolina for a 5 p.m. match at Elon.
