Men’s Soccer Drops Opening ASun Match

MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida fell in the opening match of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference season. North Florida allowed a pair of second half goals, falling, 2-0, on the road to Mercer at Bear Field. The loss drops the Ospreys to 1-8-0 overall, while the Bears improve to 5-3-1.
Offensively, the Ospreys recorded eight shots on the night with a pair of shots on goal. Luis Daniel Camejo led the team with three shots, while Teddy Mulamba added two shots. Casey Caronis, Oscar Castillo and Enrique Haeussler each took one shot apiece. Caronis and Haeussler's shots each came on goal.
Goalkeeper Federico Bertele finished the match with four saves. In the first half, the true freshman kept the Bears off the scoreboard with a pair of saves. Bertele added two more saves in the second half.
The two teams entered halftime knotted at 0-0. The Bears edged the Ospreys in shots in the first half, 6-to-3. Mercer recorded a pair of shots on goal with North Florida posting a shot on goal as well. In the first half, Camejo led the team with a pair of shots, while Haeussler added a shot.
Mercer broke the deadlock in the 70th minute of the match. The Bears' Will Betts scored his fourth goal of the season to put the hosts in front. He headed the ball into the goal off of bobble by the Ospreys' keeper.
The Bears used a second goal in the 80th minute to increase their lead. Mercer's Ryan King netted his second goal of the season off of an assist from Matt Brazer on a through ball behind the back line.
North Florida returns to action on Friday, Oct. 7, as the Ospreys take on East Tennessee State at Hodges Stadium at 7 p.m.
