Men’s Soccer Hosts Pair of ASun Foes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team is set to host a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference opponents at Hodges Stadium this weekend. The Ospreys will play East Tennessee State on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., before hosting USC Upstate on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 1-8-0 overall record and a 0-1-0 Atlantic Sun Conference mark. ETSU is 6-3-1 overall, but 0-2-0 in conference play, while Upstate is 4-4-1 and 1-0-1 in the league.
The matches over the weekend will be the first home conference matches of the year for UNF. The Ospreys opened A-Sun play with a road match against Mercer last week. North Florida allowed two late goals in the match and fell 2-0 to the Bears.
East Tennessee State enters the weekend after dropping a pair of conference matches to start the season. The Bucs were edged 2-1 by Lipscomb and fell 3-1 to Belmont. Despite starting conference play 0-2-0, ETSU has been very impressive this season posting two wins and a tie against four ranked opponents.
USC Upstate enters the weekend with a .500 overall record. In Atlantic Sun Conference play, the Spartans defeated Lipscomb, 3-1, before earning a scoreless draw with Belmont. Upstate is 3-1-1 at home, but 1-3-0 away from County University Soccer Stadium. The Spartans will play Jacksonville on Friday night before taking on North Florida on Sunday.
The meeting between the Ospreys and the Bucs will be the fourth in school history. ETSU holds a slight 2-1-0 advantage in the series. UNF won the first meeting between the two schools (W, 2-1) in 2008, but has fallen 1-0 in back-to-back seasons against the Bucs.
North Florida and USC Upstate have met on the soccer field 14 times with the Spartans holding an 8-5-1 edge. The Ospreys have won four consecutive matches in the series and three of the last four meetings in Jacksonville. During the four consecutive victories, the Ospreys have outscored the Spartans, 10-3.
Offensively, the Ospreys are led by a trio of youngsters. Freshmen Mauricio Valderruten and Oscar Castillo, along with sophomore Josh Ciambella lead the team in goals, freshman Casey Caronis boasts the team lead in assists.
Freshmen Federico Bertele and Ryan Husted have both seen time at goalkeeper for the Ospreys. The duo have logged 810:00 combined minutes between the posts, recording 34 saves and boasting a shutout.
