JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – East Tennessee State scored a goal in the 101st minute of double overtime to edge the University of North Florida, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Hodges Stadium. The Ospreys' Enrique Haeussler netted his first two goals of the season in the loss.
North Florida fell to 1-9-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, while ETSU improved to 7-3-1 and 1-2-0 in the league.
Offensively, North Florida recorded seven shots including five shots on goal, while ETSU took 16 shots with nine on goal.
The Ospreys were led by Haeussler's two goals. The senior took just two shots that he was able to convert into goals. The multi-goal match was the first of Haeussler's North Florida career. Last season, the forward finished the season with two goals, scoring against Lipscomb and USC Upstate.
Mauricio Valderruten also added a pair of shots that were both on goal. Teddy Mulamba, Josh Ciambella and Luis Daniel Camejo each had a shot apiece on the day with Mulamba's shot coming on goal.
At goal, Federico Bertele tied a season high with six saves in the match. The freshman also recorded six saves in a road match against Elon.
ETSU was the first to scratch the scoreboard with a goal in the 19th minute. David Geno scored on a free kick from one yard outside the box, driven to the low far right post.
Trailing 1-0, the Ospreys used a goal from Haeussler to knot the score at one apiece in the 23rd minute. North Florida attempted a corner kick that was headed out by the ETSU defense. Haeussler picked up the loose volley from 25 yards out and put the ball over the goalkeepers hands and under the crossbar for his first goal of the season.
Haeussler's second goal of the season in the 78th minute put the Ospreys in front, 2-1. The striker bent a free kick around a wall of defenders and put the ball in the upper right corner for the go-ahead goal.
The Bucs were able to score the equalizer in the 89th minute of the match. ETSU benefited from a foul inside the box that resulted in a penalty kick that Aaron Schoenfeld converted.
The score remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. The two teams were unable to score in the first overtime. ETSU took three shots in the first overtime compared to just one by the Ospreys, but Bertele was able to keep both shots on goal out of the net and force a second overtime.
ETSU's Theo Yang broke the tie 25 seconds into the second overtime. The ball bounced around in the box before Itode Fubara directed it to Yang whose shot was deflected into the goal for the match-winner.
