JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team begins the Atlantic Sun Conference season with a road match against Mercer on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at Bear Field. North Florida enters the match 1-7-0 overall, while Mercer is 4-3-1 on the year. The match is the conference opener for both teams.
“The second half of our season starts on Thursday night,” head coach Derek Marinatos stated. “We have played a very competitive nonconference schedule to show us what we need to work on and to help us improve for Atlantic Sun play. Mercer is a good team, but I think we match up well with them. It will be a tough match because both teams are looking for that first conference win of the season.”
The all-time series between the Ospreys and Bears is tied at 3-3-1. UNF is 2-1-1 all-time in Jacksonville, but 1-2-0 overall in Macon, Ga. North Florida has won three of the last four meetings with Mercer, including a 2-1 overtime victory against the Bears last season. The Ospreys claimed a 2-1 victory over the Bears in the last meeting between the two teams in Macon in 2009. The victory secured a first round home match for the Ospreys in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, which was played against Mercer.
Offensively, the Ospreys are led by a trio of youngsters. Freshmen Mauricio Valderruten and Oscar Castillo, along with sophomore Josh Ciambella lead the team in goals, freshman Casey Caronis boasts the team lead in assists.
Freshmen Federico Bertele and Ryan Husted have both seen time at goalkeeper for the Ospreys. The duo have logged 720:00 combined minutes between the posts, recording 32 saves and boasting a shutout.
