TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team fell to nationally-ranked Florida State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles are ranked ninth in the country by the NSCAA.
Five different players scored for FSU, while the Ospreys only managed two shots on the day. Freshman Kristin Grubka began the scoring off a long pass from senior defender Katie Riley. Grubka controlled the pass and easily put away the chance from eight yards out. Junior defender Ines Jaurena then put the Seminoles up 2-0 in the 35th minute, firing a shot from 18 yards that snuck just inside the left post.
The Ospreys managed to take the 2-0 deficit into halftime with the help of three first-half saves from UNF sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey.
“We played extremely well for the first 15 minutes,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “I think after that their athleticism kind of got us back on our heels.”
Senior Tori Huster and junior Tiffany McCarty doubled the Seminoles' lead with goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes, respectively. Both goals came from crosses, effectively sealing the Ospreys' fate.
Junior Jessica Price closed the scoring in the 76th minute when she dribbled to 15 yards and blasted another strike inside the left post to put FSU up 5-0. The Seminoles tallied nine corner kicks to UNF's one.
Sophomore forward Carolina Lencina had the sole shot on goal for UNF.
“I think it was good that we got to play a team of Florida State's caliber so we can learn from it and get better for the rest of the season,” Hamilton said. “We definitely found some places we need to improve in.”
FSU improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Ospreys dropped to 1-2-1. UNF is next in action Friday, Sept. 2 when they will play Furman at Jacksonville University at 5 p.m.
