JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team will hope to use the momentum from a 5-0 win over Coastal Carolina as it faces road games against Western Carolina and nationally-ranked Florida State this week.
This past weekend, the Ospreys opened their season with two non-conference games at Hodges Stadium. After holding on to a scoreless draw against Charlotte on Friday, UNF used four second-half goals to beat Coastal Carolina 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
For her efforts over the weekend, sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week. Dorsey tallied 12 saves over 200 minutes during the two games without allowing a goal to notch the first such honor of her career.
Western Carolina (Thu. Aug. 25, 7 p.m.) is 1-1 so far on the season. The Catamounts dropped their season opener to Western Kentucky, 1-0 in overtime, before beating Murray State 2-1 with a goal from sophomore defender Kayla Sedgley in the final minute of play. UNF has never faced Western Carolina in women's soccer.
Florida State (Sun. Aug. 28, 2 p.m.), currently ranked in the top-five in two national polls, is also 1-1 after playing two other nationally-ranked teams on the road. After beating #19 Oregon State 1-0 in their season opener, the Seminoles dropped a 2-1 decision to #7 Portland. The Ospreys have played Florida State twice in their history, losing both, with the most recent contest in 2007.
Thursday's game represents the beginning of a lengthy road trip for the Ospreys, who won't be back at Hodges Stadium until September 30.
