JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team will play its second exhibition match of the season on Saturday, Aug. 20, as the Ospreys head to North Carolina to take on UNC Wilmington. Kickoff for the match is slated for 2 p.m.
The Ospreys enter the match looking for another good outing. In its debut, North Florida played 20 different players, including 14 freshmen.
“Exhibition matches are a good chance to get some different players on the field and see how they react to live action,” said head coach Derek Marinatos. “We were able to see a lot of different players in the first exhibition and we will do the same against UNC Wilmington. I was happy with our first exhibition. We played a lot of young guys, but I thought the entire team competed hard and showed improvement.”
Sophomore forward Ricky Lawrence tallied three shots on Wednesday night as North Florida Men's Soccer dropped its season-opening exhibition to Flagler, 1-0. The match was balanced with the Saints using an early first half goal to take an early lead which they would not relinquish.
North Florida recorded six shots on the night compared to eight shots by Flagler. Each team recorded a pair of shots on goal on the night. The Ospreys recorded all six shots in the first half, while the Saints recorded a majority of their shots in the second stanza.
The Saints were able to net a goal in the 15th minute of the match as Flagler's Zach Shanahan was able to score off of a deflected shot off of the crossbar.
For the Ospreys, Lawrence led all players with three shots, while freshman Mauricio Valderruten added a pair of shots. Both players each recorded a shot on goal in the match. The final shot of the night for UNF came from sophomore Josh Ciambella.
North Florida used a pair of freshmen at goal. The duo of Ryan Husted and Frederico Bertele limited the vaunted Flagler offense to just one goal, while the UNF defense held the Saints to just eight shot with only two shots on goal.
