WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team fell in its second exhibition match of the season, losing to UNC Wilmington by a final score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The match was shortened due to lightning in the area.
“We played hard and we had some chances,” head coach Derek Marinatos said. “We controlled the ball well and had a few opportunities. We hit the post once and we hit the crossbar on a header. They got a goal that was a fluke and one off of a deflection, but those things happen. The score doesn't reflect how well we played as a team. We got better from Flagler to today. It is preseason so the biggest thing I am looking for is improvement and we did that today.”
Due to inclement weather in the Wilmington area, the two teams opted to play three 30-minutes periods. The two teams were scoreless through the first period, but Wilmington was able to break the deadlock in the second stanza. The match was called with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the third period.
North Florida returns to action on Tuesday, Aug. 23, as the Ospreys play their final exhibition match against Rollins at 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
