JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns to action on Wednesday night as the Ospreys travel to Gainesville, Fla. to square off against the No. 5 Florida Gators on the diamond in a 7:00 p.m. game at McKethan Stadium.
The games will be available via live stats. In addition, the game will be aired live on WHJX-FM (105.7 Jacksonville).
North Florida enters the week with a 25-21 overall record and a 13-14 mark in the Atlantic Sun, while Florida is 36-12 with an 18-6 record in the SEC.
The series between the two schools is tied at four games apiece. North Florida is 2-4 all-time in Gainesville, winning the first two meetings in Gainesville in 2007 (W, 15-8) and 2008 (W, 11-10).
The two schools met once last season with the Gators getting the best of the Ospreys, 9-3. The Ospreys offense nearly matched the No. 4 team in the country, recording 11 hits compared to 12 by the Gators. North Florida was unable to string together timely hits, scoring one run in three separate innings.
In last season's game, T.J. Gavlik had just one hit, but made it count as he belted his first collegiate home run. Gavlik scored two runs and had one of the Ospreys' three RBI.
Preston Hale finished the game 3-for-5, leading the team in hits and RBI. Michael Smith and Sam Perry each had a pair of hits in the game with Perry recording his first triple of the season. Robbie Collier pinch hit in the ninth inning. He walked, stole second base and eventually scored the third and final run of the game for the Ospreys.
On the mound, North Florida used a trio of pitchers. Kyle Westwood entered the game in relief. The righthander tossed 3.1 innings, scattering six hits with two walks and strikeouts. Tommy Organ worked the final 2.1 innings. The hurler surrendered one hit, while striking out one in a scoreless outing.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Gators dropped two of three games at No. 18 Arkansas over the weekend.
Alex Panteliodis will be making his seventh start and 12th appearance. Over 33.2 innings, Panteliodis has registered 29 strikeouts and issued just five walks, while opponents are batting .274 against him. In his last outing against Bethune-Cookman, he threw 4.1 scoreless innings with three hits and five K and earned the win since he was working on a pitch count.
