UNF Defeats Crosstown Rival JU, 4-3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team knocked off crosstown Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex on the JU campus.

UNF (13-5, 8-2 A-Sun) fell behind early, winning just one of the three doubles matches as the Dolphins (15-5, 6-4 A-Sun) took a 1-0 lead in the match. The UNF duo of Melinda Doak and Victoria Krook picked up a win in the No. 3 doubles, defeating Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer, 8-5.

The Ospreys rallied back in singles play to claim four of the six matches with wins in the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6.

Danielle Day secured a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Gabriella Bartos in the No. 2. In the No. 4, Melanie Aguirre downed Natalia Melibeu 7-6(4), 6-1 while Doak defeated Sepncer, 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 6.

In the No. 5 singles match, UNF's Simona Weymar had a three set battle with Iwinski. Weymar won the first set, 7-5, but fell 6-2 in the second. The Osprey player rallied back to claim the match with a 6-3 win in the third set to secure the win for UNF.

With the win the Ospreys secured a point in the annual River City Rumble "Battle of the Barrel."

The Ospreys will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 10 at No. 44 South Florida. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
