
Softball Drops Doubleheader to Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida softball team dropped its doubleheader to conference-leading Lipscomb at Draper Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys fell 7-0 in the first game before dropping an 8-0 decision in five innings in game two.
After the day, North Florida falls to 20-23 overall and 4-8 in the A-Sun, while Lipscomb improves to 22-14 and 9-1 in the league.
Up next, North Florida strays from conference play as the squad travels to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida State in a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 13.
GAME ONE
Three Lipscomb homeruns, accounting for five runs, doomed the North Florida squad as Lipscomb downed the Ospreys, 7-0, in game one of the doubleheader. The win marked Lipscomb's sixth consecutive win over the Ospreys.
Lipscomb plated the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning, compliments of a two-run homerun by Caroline Mason. The Lady Bison drew a walk in the first at-bat and the next two batters struck out swinging, but Mason skied a deep ball over the right centerfield wall to take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
North Florida had an opportunity to answer the call in the second inning with runners on first and second on back-to-back singles, but with two outs. The next batter struck out to end the threat.
Mason connected on a deep ball again in the third inning, this time to left field to put the Lady Bison up 3-0. North Florida walked in another run for Lipscomb in the fifth inning.
The Lady Bison continued to pad its lead in the sixth inning, when Mollie Mitchell crushed a three-run homerun over the left field wall, giving Lipscomb a 7-0 advantage, which it would hold on to for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Cortney Radke (18-14) was tagged with the loss after hurling five innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits. Radke fanned six batters and walked seven.
Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl (16-7) picked up the win, working a complete-game shutout and allowing just four hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
GAME TWO
In game two, North Florida was shutout, 8-0, in five innings to wrap up the doubleheader with the Lady Bison.
Again, Lipscomb scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Haley Elliott singled to right field, plating two runs and another run scored off a muffed throw by the catcher to give Lipscomb a 3-0 lead after one frame.
In the second inning, the Lady Bison plated two more runs, first on a passed ball and then walking in a run.
Lipscomb tagged on three more runs in the fifth inning to claim the contest via the run-rule, 8-0.
The Ospreys' freshman Cortney Radke (18-15) was tagged with the loss after working just 1.1 innings, allowing five runs – three earned, three hits and striking out three. The Lady Bison's Ali Watson (4-2) earned the win after pitching a five-inning complete game shutout in which she allowed just four hits and fanned three batters.
