North Florida's next and final home regular season matchup is a road doubleheader against crosstown-rival Jacksonville on Wednesday, May 4. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET) at the JU Softball Complex.
GAME ONE
After the first batter for Stetson in the second inning struck out, freshman pitcher Cortney Radke notched her 282nd strikeout of the year, becoming the single season school record holder for strikeouts to lead North Florida over the Hatters, 5-0, in game one.
Radke, who fanned 14 in the first game, surpassed the former record of 281 set by Trisha Davis in 2000.
North Florida plated two runs early, including a homerun by junior Alyson Bailey in the second inning, to take a 2-0 lead after two frames. The deep ball to left field was the first of the season for Bailey.
The Hatters threatened in the third inning, placing runners on second and third with just one out. However, Radke struck out the next batter looking and got the following batter to ground out to shortstop.
The Ospreys added one more run in both the third and fourth innings to go up 4-0 on Stetson through four. The lead could have been much stretched way out as North Florida loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but was able to manufacture just one run.
Again, Stetson threatened with runners in scoring position, this time with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and just one out. Radke worked out of the jam, however, fanning the next two batters in order.
Junior Kaley Brosky tripled in the sixth to bring in a run, giving the Ospreys a 5-0 advantage, which would hold up as the final score. Brosky was outstanding in the game, going 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs and one RBI.
In the seventh, Stetson once again loaded the bases with one out, but Radke worked out of the jam yet again.
In a complete-game effort to get the win, Radke (21-18) hurled her seventh shutout of the year, allowing just four hits while walking four and striking out an impressive 14 batters. It is the second time Radke has struck out exactly 14 batters in a game, doing so also against Florida A&M in her no-hitter on March 2, 2011.
Stetson's Meredith Owen (7-12) picked up the loss, working a six-inning complete game in which she allowed five earned runs on nine hits, one walk and one strikeout.
GAME TWO
North Florida used 14 hits, the most as a team since tallying 15 at Charleston Southern on March 14, 2009, and scored five runs in the first three innings to overpower Stetson in game two, claiming a 6-1 victory to complete the series sweep.
After plating a run in each of the first two frames, the Ospreys used a three-run third inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead over the Hatters. Stetson had its only run of the game cross in the second inning on a walked-in run with the bases loaded.
Stetson threatened in the fifth, putting runners on first and third with two outs but the next batter would fly out to left field to end the top half of the frame. North Florida, however, added another run the bottom of the fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
The Hatters led off the top of the seventh inning with a triple, looking to attempt a rally. The following batters struck out and flied out to right field, but not deep enough to score the run from third. With two outs, popped up to the pitcher to end the game as the Ospreys won 6-1.
Freshman Cortney Radke (22-18) again earned the win with a complete-game effort in which she allowed just one earned run on six hits and four walks while fanning 10. Radke now has 303 strikeouts on the season.
The Hatters' Camille Czarnecki (9-9) picked up the loss after working a six-inning complete-game, allowing six runs – two earned – on 14 hits and no walks while fanning two.
