Game One Box Score ::: Game Two Box Score
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nine errors and six unearned runs plagued the University of North Florida softball team (22-29) as the Ospreys were swept by FIU (27-23) on a hot Friday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Panthers dropped North Florida with a 7-1 decision in game one before hanging on for a 5-4 victory in game two, despite a four-run seventh inning by the Ospreys.
Up next, North Florida hosts its final home game of the season, Senior Day, as the squad welcomes conference foe Stetson on Saturday, April 30, for a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. (ET).
GAME ONE
Seven errors, and six unearned runs, in game one plagued the North Florida squad as it fell, 7-1, to FIU on Friday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex.
The first batter of the game for FIU reached on a fielding error, eventually coming around to score, and that's how the game went for the most part. Four of the six Panther runs were unearned on the day, with the sole earned run coming in the second inning on a bases-loaded single.
North Florida plated a run in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore Jackie Reese hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring senior Caroline Torre from third to cut the deficit to 2-1.
FIU added four more runs in the fifth frame to stretch its lead out to 7-1, putting the game out of reach for the Ospreys with just two innings remain.
In six innings, the Ospreys' junior Chie Someya (2-5) allowed three runs – one earned – on five hits to pick up the loss, while walking three and striking out two. FIU's Jen Gniadek (13-11) earned the win, working four innings, while allowing just one run on four hits, two walks and fanning two.
GAME TWO
In game two, North Florida put together a nice rally in the seventh inning with four runs in the frame, but ended up short as the Ospreys fell, 5-4, to FIU to complete the Panther sweep.
FIU, up 1-0 already, plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead for what seemed to be enough room for the Panthers to breathe heading into the final inning. The Ospreys had different plans, however.
With the bases loaded and just one out in the seventh inning, sophomore Jackie Reese watched four balls to walk in the squad's first run of the game. Senior Caroline Torre followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to cut the deficit to 5-2 and the rally seemed to be on for North Florida. Freshman Lauren Pollack drove in two more runs with a high-hit ball to left field that was just feet from clearing the fence, which would have tied the game.
Unfortunately, a routine ground ball to first base ended the game with the Ospreys still trailing 5-4.
Junior Chie Someya (2-6) was again tagged with the loss in game two, hurling a 5.1 innings in which she allowed five runs – three earned – on eight hits and no walks. The Panthers' Mari Dawson (9-8) picked up the win after working 6.1 shutout innings, scattering just four hits and two walks while fanning three.
