ERIE, Colo. – The University of North Florida golf team closed the 2010-11 season Saturday, carding a 295 (+7) in final round action of the NCAA South Central-Colorado Regional held at the Colorado National Golf Club.
The Ospreys posted a 54-hole score of 893 en route to finishing 13th at the NCAA postseason event. The regional appearance marked UNF's second straight and third time in the last four years.
“Today was an okay round for us,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We battled windy conditions all day long and I was proud of the effort from the guys. Joey (Marino) shot a real nice round. Ultimately, our poor first round gave us no chance to advance. This tournament was a great experience for us because we had the opportunity to play at altitude and in the mountains. This is much different style of golf than we see in the southeast.”
Sophomore Joey Marino paced the Ospreys during the final round firing a one-over 73, which marked a near career best performance and bettered his second round tally by seven strokes.
Junior Joe Byun and senior Chris Kennedy were UNF's top finishers at the NCAA Regional earning a tie for 50th with scores of 221. Byun and Kennedy along with junior teammate Kevin Aylwin all posted final rounds of 74. Aylwin shot a 224 total over the three days to finish tied for 60th.
Senior Jacob Davidson concluded his collegiate career with a 73rd-place finish after posting a 231 total including a final round 77, while Marino rounded out the UNF lineup with a 75th-place showing (233).
Top ranked Oklahoma State led wire-to-wire and dominated the competition by 18 strokes after finishing with an 833 tournament total. Colorado State finished second at 851 with Northwestern (855), Georgia (857) and Arizona State (857) completing the Top Five teams. OSU's Kevin Tway carded a 206 (-10) in capturing the individual medalist title.
The Top Five team finishers at six regional sites advance to the NCAA Championship along with the top individual finisher not on an advancing team. Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez qualified as the South Central-Colorado Regional individual after shooting a 210 (-6).
“We are disappointed to not be advancing to NCAA finals,” added Schroeder. “However, that doesn't take away from the good year we had. I am proud of this group and the things we did accomplish.”
The NCAA Championship will be played May 31-June 4 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
