JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team dropped a 5-2 decision in game one to Florida Gulf Coast before claiming a 2-0 victory in game two at the UNF Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.
After the day, North Florida moves to 22-27 overall and 6-10 in the conference, while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 29-25 and 12-6 in the league.
Up next, North Florida hosts Florida International in its final non-conference meeting of the year on Friday, April 22, for a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. (ET).
GAME ONE
Florida Gulf Coast plated four runs in the first inning, a lead that would prove insurmountable for North Florida to comeback from, as the Ospreys dropped game one, 5-2.
The Eagles' Emily Lanier connected on a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning to put the Florida Gulf Coast squad up 4-0 after the first frame. A single through the middle plated the first run of the game earlier in the inning.
Florida Gulf Coast added another score in the third, before North Florida was finally on the board as well in the bottom half of the third frame. With two outs, a single and a double put runners on second and third as freshman Danica Mandarano came to the plate, singling to right field which would score both runners to cut the deficit to 5-2 though the lead would hold up the Eagles.
In seven innings, the Ospreys' freshman Cortney Radke (19-18) allowed five runs on eight hits to pick up the loss, while walking five and striking out 12. Florida Gulf Coast's Catherine McDaniel (15-10) earned the win, working seven innings as well, allowing just two runs on eight hits, one walk and fanning six.
GAME TWO
In game two, senior Caroline Torre crushed a two-run homerun in the first inning and freshman Cortney Radke worked a two-hit complete game shutout in the circle to lead North Florida over Florida Gulf Coast, 2-0.
Freshman Brittany Hendrix legged out an infield single to lead off the game for the Ospreys and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the first inning and Hendrix on second, Torre connected on her second deep ball of the season to clear the bases and put North Florida up 2-0.
Radke impressively worked out of several jams throughout the course of the game as Florida Gulf Coast finished the night with seven runners left on base.
Freshman Cortney Radke (20-18) picked up the win, hurling a complete game shutout – her seventh of the season – in which she allowed just two hits while striking out nine batters and walking four. The Eagles' Kelci Breaux (6-8) was tagged with loss after working six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while fanning six.
