
Ospreys Secure 5-2 Win Over Penn

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Claiming the doubles point early, the University of North Florida women's tennis team added four singles' wins en route to defeating Penn, 5-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.
UNF (5-2) got off to a strong start in the doubles' matches. Junior Aline Berkenbrock teamed up with freshman Simona Weymar at the No. 1 to defeat Alexa Ely and Connie Hsu, 8-4.
In the No. 2 doubles, junior Danielle Day and sophomore Melanie Aguirre claimed an 8-1 decision over Penn's (5-6) Lauren Bridges and Jules Rodin.
The Ospreys moved into singles play, up 1-0 in the match. Aguirre put UNF up 2-0 after defeating Emma Whitfield, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4.
Senior Victoria Krook and Weymar finished their matches to pick-up the final points needed for the Ospreys to claim the match over the Quakers. Krook defeated Stephanie Do, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 while Weymar had a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Daniela DePaoli in the No. 5.
Day secured a win at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ely.
In the No. 1 singles' match, Berkenbrock faced off with nationally ranked #12 Hsu. The Penn player secured the point for the Quakers with scores of 6-3, 6-0.
UNF freshman Melinda Doak battled in the No. 6 to three sets. Doak took the first set 6-4, but Rodin came back to win the second 6-4. The two went back and forth in the tie breaker, but Rodin held on for a 12-10 win.
The Ospreys will be back on the court when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, Feb. 11 for an Atlantic Sun Conference match against USC Upstate beginning at 10 a.m. UNF will remain on the road to face A-Sun opponent Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m.
