JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team (15-12) returns home to host Georgia Southern (13-17) in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 23. The first pitch of the game one is slated for 4 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex.
Third-year head coach Marcie Hickey reached a milestone with the Ospreys win over UT-Chattanooga, 4-0, on March 20. The victory marked Hickey's 65th at the helm of the North Florida program, becoming tied for the second-most all-time wins as head coach in North Florida history.
The Ospreys enter the contest with a 15-12 record, having won 10 of its last 13 games. The squad last competed at the USF “The Game” Tournament, claiming three of five games in Tampa. Freshman Cortney Radke appeared in the circle in all five games and started three en route to a 3-0 record and 1.22 ERA on the weekend, including a complete game shutout against UT-Chattanooga.
At the plate, junior Kaley Brosky was outstanding last weekend, hitting at a clip of .643 and driving in five RBI while scoring five runs. Brosky hit 9-for-14, drew four walks and notched three multi-hit games over the weekend.
Georgia Southern brings a record of 13-17 into Jacksonville, having just swept three games in a weekend series over SoCon foe Western Carolina. The Eagles are led at the plate by Marie Fogle who is hitting .394, belting 10 homeruns on the year with one triple, six doubles and 20 RBI. In the circle, Brianna Streetmon has worked a team-leading 73.2 innings to a record of 7-6 and holds an ERA of 3.99 entering the week.
Of North Florida's 12 losses, seven came at the hands of either nationally-ranked teams or squads that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season.
The two schools will be meeting for the 16th and 17th time on Wednesday with North Florida holding an 11-4 advantage in the all-time series. The Ospreys have currently won eight consecutive over the Eagles, while Georgia Southern last claimed a victory on March 8, 2006.
