JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida softball team (10-9) shutout its fourth consecutive opponent, cruising to a 9-0 victory in five innings over Mount St. Mary's Friday night on day one of the UNF Osprey Invitational at the UNF Softball Complex. The blanking of the Mountaineers marks the longest stretch of shutout victories since shutting out five in a row March 11-13, 2005.
Additionally, the Ospreys run-ruled its first opponent this season – in five innings – which marks the first time the squad has run-ruled a team since March 3, 2009 against Belmont. The 9-0 win is the largest margin of victory for North Florida since the Belmont game in 2009, which was claimed 13-0 in six innings. The last five-inning run-rule for North Florida was on April 8, 2008 against Jacksonville (9-1).
Freshman pitcher Cortney Radke continued her stellar rookie campaign, turning in her fourth win in a row in the circle and third straight shutout. Radke allowed no runs on three hits, fanning eight of the 17 batters she faced and walking just two.
North Florida has yet to allow a single run when playing within the confines of the UNF Softball Complex, and is now outscoring opponents 20-0 while staying unbeaten at home.
The runs of the game came in chunks, with the first four crossing in the second inning. Senior Caroline Torre doubled to center field to plate the first run, who then scored after a single by junior Alyson Bailey. Freshman Lauren Pollack brought around the final two runs of the inning on a double to center field.
In the fourth inning, the Ospreys erupted again, this time for five runs to take a 9-0 lead and essentially put the game out of reach.
Four North Florida batters had multi-hit games today. Bailey was 3-for-3, Pollack was 2-for-3, Torre was 2-for-2 and junior Kelly Dill was 2-for-3 from the plate. In addition, freshman Mariah Reynolds crushed her third homerun of the season, and just missed another to center field by a few feet.
North Florida continues play in the tournament on Saturday with a rematch from Tuesday against Delaware State. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
