PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Paced by a pair of Top 10 finishes from Kevin Phelan and Kevin Aylwin the University of North Florida golf team earned a second place finish Tuesday at the JU Invitational held at the TPC at Sawgrass PLAYERS Stadium Course.
The Ospreys carded a final round 297 to shoot a 54-hole total of 883. Top-ranked Florida captured the team championship with an 858 tally.
Phelan, a sophomore, led the way for UNF posting at one-under-par 71 in the final round on his way to a tie for third place at 214 (-2). It marked the sixth Top Five finish of his career and was his top finish for 2010-11.
Aylwin, a junior, collected his third Top 10 showing of the year after finishing tied for eighth at 217 including a final round score of even par 72.
Jacob Davidson was tied for 28th (227) after shooting an 81 on Tuesday while Major Forbess finished tied for 42nd (231) including a final round 73 and Chris Kennedy was tied for 55th (237)
"It was a solid finish for our team this week," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "I thought Kevin Phelan had a great event and Kevin Aylwin had a solid finish. We need a few other guys to become more consistent to allow us to become a better team. It is a long spring and we will work hard to make that happen."
In the 15-team competition, Jacksonville State and Liberty shared third-place honors behind Florida and UNF with matching 886 totals. Clemson finished fifth at 888 followed by Wake Forest (894), East Carolina (902), Mercer (904), ETSU (910), Florida Gulf Coast (916), Charleston Southern (923), Georgia State (928), Jacksonville and James Madison (933) and Old Dominion, who withdrew on the final day.
The Gators' Bank Vongvanij, the nation's top-rated player, captured the individual medalist crown with a score of 211 (-5).
In addition to participating in the JU Invitational, several UNF individual players took part in the Ponte Vedra Invitational held at the Ponte Vedra Country Club Monday and Tuesday. Brant DeLongy finished tied for seventh (79-73-73=226), Joey Marino was ninth (71-79-77=227) and Gavin Cambre was 11th (78-88-81=247).
Up next on North Florida's spring schedule is the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Feb. 12-13 in Gainesville, Fla.
