RADFORD, Va. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team concluded action in the 2011 Highlander Invitational at the Dedmon Center on the campus of Radford University, finishing the meet in fifth place.
Campbell (673) won the event, holding off Liberty (666.5). Georgia Southern (619) claimed third place with Saint Francis (477) taking fourth. The Ospreys (430.5) finished fifth, followed by Youngstown State (345), Mount Saint Mary's (283), meet host Radford (183), Millersville (128) and North Carolina A&T (8).
In the three-meter diving competition, junior Julia Moomaw earned a second place finish with a final score of 236.75. Freshman Monica Rice scored a season-best score of 224.25 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals, where she finished fifth (208.95).
The next event was the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Christine Kemp was the top finisher of the day for North Florida in the event with a time of 18:13.35. Freshman Allison Troia (18:52.01) and sophomore Alexis Regan (19:47.16) also competed in the mile for the Ospreys.
Freshmen Kristina Alexiou and Ellice Mae Sanchez were the top two finishers for UNF in the 200 backstroke. Alexiou posted a season-best time of 2:09.24, while Sanchez recorded a new season mark with a 2:12.57. Junior Katie England notched a season-best mark of 2:18.68 in the preliminaries of the 200 back before besting that mark with a 2:17.47 in the finals.
The finals of the 100 freestyle saw freshmen Rebeca Bernard and Bridget Woods finishing back-to-back with times of 55.46 and 55.50, respectively. Both freshmen notched season-best times in the preliminaries of the event once again finishing back-to-back with times of 55.37 for R. Bernard and 55.38 for Woods.
In the 200 breaststroke, Woods and junior Sara Evans finished second and fourth, respectively. Woods posted a time of 2:24.64, while Evans recorded her best time of the season in the event with a 2:26.84. England finished the finals with a time of 2:37.67, but earned a spot in the finals with a season-best time of 2:35.72 in the preliminaries. Troia (2:41.78) also participated in the finals.
Freshman Lissa Janowicz was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys in the 200 butterfly. The rookie posted a time of 2:09.44 in the finals of the event.
UNF had a pair of relay teams in the final event of the invitational. In the 400 freestyle relay, the combo of Kemp, Woods, R. Bernard and freshman Natalie McCallum posted the top mark for the Ospreys with a time of 3:36.73, ahead of the relay team of freshman Maria Bernard, Regan, Evans and Janowicz who posted a time of 3:46.60.
North Florida continues winter conditioning and practice before returning to competition in early January.
