Swimming/Diving Drops Meet to UNC Wilmington

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its first meet of the new year, the University of North Florida swimming and diving team dropped 141-96 decision to UNC Wilmington on Friday afternoon at the UNF Aquatic Center. In addition to the women's meet, UNCW's men's team competed against College of Charleston, 124-63.
In the first event of the day, the freshmen relay team of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Bridget Woods, Natalie McCallum and Christine Kemp finished in second place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:58.86.
In the 1,000 freestyle, freshman Kristina Alexiou, Kemp and freshman Lissa Janowicz finished in order. Freshmen Maria Bernard and Rebeca Bernard posted times of 1:58.64 and 1:58.87, respectively, to claim second and third in the 200 freestyle. Sanchez, M. Bernard and senior Gala Poon finished 1-2-3 among Ospreys swimmers in the 50 freestyle.
Junior Sara Evans edged out fellow teammate Woods to take first place in the 200 individual medley. Evans recorded a time of 2:11.71, while Woods posted a 2:12.06.
Freshman Monica Rice earned her first collegiate victory, winning the 1-meter board in the diving competition with a score of 252.98. Junior Julia Moomaw took second place with a score of 244.88, while newcomer Morgan Whittle earned third place honors.
Janowicz earned her first collegiate victory in the 200 butterfly, posting a time of 2:10.52. Janowicz finished just ahead of Evans who took second place with a 2:11.23.
In the 100 freestyle, R. Bernard was North Florida's top finisher with a time of 54.77, finishing ahead of her sister M. Bernard and newcomer Leah Abbamondi, who was competing in her first collegiate event.
The 200 backstroke saw Alexiou, Sanchez, junior Katie England and Poon finish in order for the Ospreys. In the final distance event of the day, Kemp was the top finisher for UNF posting a time of 5:19.02.
Moomaw earned first place accolades in the 3-meter diving competition, posting a score of 264.83. Rice took second place with Whittle claiming third.
Woods was the top finisher for the Ospreys in the 200 breaststroke, notching a time of 2:27.03. Evans and England finished second and third among UNF swimmers in the event. North Florida ended the meet with the 400 freestyle relay team of Alexiou, Poon, England and freshman Emily Wynn.
North Florida returns to the pool on Saturday afternoon as the Ospreys take on College of Charleston and Radford in a tri-meet at the UNF Aquatic Center beginning at 12 p.m.
