North Florida Continues Highlander Invite

Day 1 Recap
RADFORD, Va. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team continued competition at the 2011 Highlander Invitational at the Dedmond Center hosted by Radford University. After the second day of competition, the Ospreys dropped to fifth overall, just 1.5 points out of fourth place.
Liberty (508.5) holds the two-day lead at the invitational, followed by Georgia Southern (460) and Campbell (458). Saint Francis (318) finished the day in fourth place, just 1.5 points ahead of North Florida (316.5). Youngstown State (232), Mount St. Mary's (204), meet-host Radford (137), Millersville (92) and North Carolina A&T (4) round out the top 10.
North Florida opened the second day of competition with the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of senior Gala Poon, junior Katie England, junior Sara Evans and freshman Kristina Alexiou turned in a time of 1:52.94 to finish the event as the top finishers for the Ospreys. The freshman relay team of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Bridget Woods, Lissa Janowicz and Maria Bernard were a few seconds off of the pace with a time of 1:57.88.
In the 400 individual medley, the Ospreys had a pair of swimmers finish in the top eight. Evans claimed a third place finish in the event with season-best time of 4:34.33, while freshman Natalie McCallum took seventh with a time of 4:37.47. Janowicz finished the race just behind McCallum with a time of 4:41.39 – a season-best time.
Janowicz competed in the next event of the afternoon, notching a season-best time of 1:00.21 in the 100 butterfly.
Christine Kemp was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys in the 200 freestyle. The freshman posted a time of 1:57.66 in the event. McCallum (1:59.47), Rebeca Bernard (1:58.57) and M. Bernard (1:59.14) also participated in the finals of the 200 free.
The 100 breaststroke saw Woods and Evans finish back-to-back for North Flordia. Woods notched a time of 1:07.63, while Evans recorded a 1:09.49. England missed a season-best time by two hundreds of a second in the preliminaries, posting a time of 1:11.37 to advance to the finals of the event.
In the 100 backstroke, Sanchez trimmed nearly two seconds off of her best time of the year to advance to the finals with a time of 1:00.94 and notched the best time of the day for the Ospreys in the finals (1:01.72). Also in the finals of the 100 back was Alexiou who finished with a time of 1:02.58.
In the final event of the day, the UNF 800 freestyle relay team of R. Bernard, Evans, Kemp and McCallum bested teammates Sanchez, Allison Troia, Alexiou and England to earn 28 points for the Ospreys in the event. North Florida's top relay time in the event finals was 7:53.07.
