Game Notes
GAINESVILLE, Fla. –The University of North Florida basketball team plays five games in the next nine days beginning Thursday against No. 7-ranked Florida at 8 p.m. in the O'Connell Center.
The Ospreys (1-1) are coming off a hard-fought 62-57 victory Monday over Savannah State in the team's home opener. The Gators are also 1-1 on the season after dropping an 81-74 decision at No. 3 Ohio State on Tuesday night.
UNF posted one of the program's most successful seasons a year ago finishing with an overall record of 15-19 and a 10-10 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. In addition, UNF reached the championship game of the ASun Tournament for the first time in program history. Four starters and 90 percent of the scoring and rebounding from that team return in 2011-12.
Junior Andy Diaz is leading the team in scoring and rebounding through the first two games averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a game. Fellow junior Jerron Granberry is second in scoring at 9.0 ppg while junior David Jeune ranks next on the glass with 5.0 boards a contest.
The Ospreys have been solid defensively holding opponents to 60.5 points a game and 37.7 percent shooting from the floor while also forcing 18.5 turnovers per game. However, UNF has struggled a bit offensively, shooting just 34.0 percent including 21.4 percent from the three-point line. North Florida seemed to break out of its shooting slump in the second half of Monday's game after connecting on 14 of 20 shots (70 percent).
The Gators opened the year with a 99-59 win over Jackson State before falling to the Buckeyes. UF is averaging 86.5 points per game and feature five players scoring in double digits led by Kenny Boynton's 17.0 ppg.
This will be the 3rd all-time meeting between UNF and UF on the hardwood with the Gators having won the previous two meetings. Florida has been nationally-ranked in each of the contests including a No. 1 ranking in 2006. The two squads last met on Nov. 20, 2007 in Gainesville, with UF claiming a 102-51 decision.
The game is being televised live by Fox Sports Florida. Fans can also catch all the exciting action live on the radio on WBOB 600 AM, The Flagship Station of the UNF Sports Network, as well as online via the radio network link on the UNF Athletic website (www.unfospreys.com) or www.wbobradio.com.
Following Thursday's tilt, UNF continues its road trip Saturday at Miami and then conclude it Monday at No. 3 Ohio State.
