GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida basketball team ran into a hot-shooting No. 7-ranked Florida squad falling 91-55 Thursday night at the O'Connell Center.
UNF (1-2) committed a season-high 21 turnovers against the aggressive defense of the Gators (2-1).
Parker Smith led the way for the Ospreys finishing with a season-high 17 points while Travis Wallace finished with 12, scoring all of his points in the second half. Andy Diaz scored 10 points for UNF.
Wallace also led the way with eight rebounds and Will Wilson handed out four assists for North Florida.
Florida placed five players in double-figures led by 20 points from Kenny Boynton. Erving Walker scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and Bradley Beal added a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double performance.
The Ospreys scored the night's first basket but the Gators quickly answered scoring eight straight points as part of a 16-3 run that put UF up 16-5 with 13:10 left in the opening half. Florida maintained a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the period as UNF committed 12 turnovers and shot a sluggish 24 percent from the floor.
Parker Smith tallied 12 points for UNF in the first half including a pair of long range three-point shots while Kenny Boynton scored 14 to pace the Gator attack.
A 10-4 spurt to open the half followed by an 11-0 run for the Gators allowed them to break the game open building a 30-point advantage, 58-28, with 14:27 left to play. The two squads would pretty much trade baskets for the remainder of play as UNF could get no closer.
UNF finished the game shooting 34 percent from the floor and made just 2 of 14 (14 percent) three-point attempts. The Ospreys kept things close on the glass trailing just 45-37 in rebounding.
North Florida continues its three-game road swing Saturday at Miami and then closes the trip Monday at #3 Ohio State
