TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –The University of North Florida basketball team opens the 2011-12 regular season Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) against No. 19 Alabama at Coleman Coliseum
The Ospreys are coming off one of the program's most successful seasons having finished with an overall record of 15-19 and a 10-10 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. In addition, UNF reached the championship game of the ASun Tournament for the first time in program history.
Third-year head coach Matthew Driscoll has four starters and eight letterwinners returning from last year's squad including nearly 90 percent of the scoring and rebounding. The returning group is highlighted by top scorers Jerron Granberry (12.0 ppg) and Parker Smith (12.0 ppg) and top rebounder Andy Diaz (5.5 rpg).
Junior David Jeune and senior Jimmy Williams are both returning starters with fellow senior Matt Sauey set for his fourth season in the Osprey lineup. Junior Will Wilson along with sophomore Charles McRoy are primed to play more significant roles for UNF this season. In addition, North Florida adds a pair of newcomers in sophomore Travis Wallace and freshman Fred Landers.
The Crimson Tide reached the championship game of the NIT a year ago posting a 25-12 overall record. In his third season, coach Anthony Grant is starting to put his stamp on the UA program.
Friday's tilt marks the second meeting on the hardwood between the Ospreys and Tide with Bama having earned a 73-51 victory in the inaugural match-up. In the first meeting on Dec. 2, 2009, UNF led 31-30 at the half before the Tide rallied in the second half. North Florida is 0-3 all-time against SEC teams and is 0-8 all-time versus AP Top 25 squads.
