TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The North Florida basketball team dropped a tough 64-44 decision at No. 19 Alabama in the season opener for both squads at Coleman Coliseum.
A stingy Crimson Tide (1-0) defense limited the Ospreys (0-1) to just 23 percent shooting from the floor to earn their 22nd straight home victory.
Junior Andy Diaz just missed a double-double for UNF finishing with a team-high nine points and eight rebounds. David Jeune, Jerron Granberry and Travis Wallace each contributed eight points for the Ospreys.
JaMychal Green led Bama with 18 points and Tony Mitchell posted a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double in the win.
“We guarded them pretty well,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “We just came up a little short of the offensive end. We missed some open shots that usually fall for us. In the first 10 minutes, we played with our plan and a purpose but then it got away from us. We just need to continue getting better.”
Defense ruled the way early in the opening half as both teams struggled to score. A Jerron Granberry three-pointer with 9:51 left in period gave Ospreys their first lead, 7-6.
Knotted at 11-11 with just under eight minutes to play, Bama used a 13-1 run over a four-minute span to take control of the momentum. UNF was unable to make a shot from the floor in the final 7:24 of the half allowing the Tide to carry a 29-16 lead into the halftime break.
The two squads traded baskets over the first few minutes of the second half before the Tide went on a 12-4 run to build a 20-point edge. Another 12-4 spurt minutes later allowed Alabama to hold their largest lead of the night.
UNF scored the final eight points of the game to set the final margin.
Despite a difference in size, North Florida held its own on the glass trailing by just two, 43-41, in the final rebounding numbers. The Ospreys also forced more turnovers (14) than it committed (13).
North Florida next returns to action Monday in its home opener against Savannah State. The game is slated for 7 p.m. at UNF Arena.
